Bartels / Prawlow / Pralow - Germany/ Australia
« on: Saturday 24 August 13 12:42 BST (UK) »
My great Grandfather August Bartels was born in Rostock (Rushtok?) Germany in the 1860's to Charles Bartels and Miyarna Prawlow or Pralow.  He married Mary Jane Lucas in Queensland, Australia in October 1895. They spent quite a long time in Townsville, Queensland Australia. He died in Brisbane in Feb 1933. They had quite a few children, my Grandmother being one. His age at death and age at marriage differ so I don't have an exact birth year for him - let alone a day or month. I cannot find a birth in Germany for him and therefore cannot find anything in relation to Charles or Miyarna either. Does anyone have any clues that would help me in this search?
Thank you
Anne

This is probably his birthplace: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rostock
(although he may also have come from some small place near there).

 - there is an 1867 census which covers Rostock. The indexing is very far from complete, but does appear to be ongoing. As far as I can see there are no birth records for Rostock online - you would probably need to work out which church records to search, so worth trying to find confirmation of the exact location.

Do you know if he naturalised? (If he appears on any electoral rolls, he was naturalised).
Does his death certificate say how long he'd been in Queensland/Australia?
Generally speaking, I would trust the age at marriage more, unless there was some reason for him to adjust it (like his wife being much younger than him).

 - might be interesting -  Augustus Bartels, A.B. (able seaman) of the Mary Agatha  - note that it says that all the crew except one (who was married) were planning to stay on in NZ, but there's no obvious trace of this man in NZ after 1883.  It wouldn't be surprising if he went on to get work on ships that were going between NZ and Australia and ended up in Queensland that way.

Hello. Thank you for that information. I remember a story that August 'jumped ship' - which one i don't know. I don't know if he ever was naturalized. Another story was that during WW1 he disappeared hiding out not wanting to be interred for the duration of the war so I would expect he may have arrived illegally and never applied to be naturalized.

Hello AlannaGrace...

Hope you don't mind me jumping onto this thread. I just wanted advice from jorose (or Berlin-Bob) as to how to proceed.

Hello jorose...

I followed your idea of the 1867 census and have found what I think is August's family, although I have no proof.

Here's my post on AlannaGrace's NZ thread...

I want to try and find the marriage of the Carl and Mariane mentioned. If the bride's maiden name is PRALOW or similar we're onto a winner. Searching the birth registers for the children mentioned would be nice too.

I've had a look on LDS for Malchow parish registers. They have been microfilmed but don't seem to be digitised.

Kirchenbuch, 1698-1888
Evangelische Kirche Malchow
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/214075

Would you know of any way of viewing the parish registers, short of ordering the microfilms from LDS.

I'm planning to join up and ask for help on Berlin-Bob's "Forum zur Ahnenforschung" website but I'm reluctant to make a fool of myself in a foreign language.

Any advice appreciated :)

Regards
Beg
