Uniform identification help please
« on: Saturday 24 August 13 11:22 BST (UK) »
Im trying to find out what regiment this uniform is.
The only clue I can see is the braid on the cuff with a single loop. (no other information about the photo is available to me) I have one ancestor that was in the army, 3rd Battalion 65th Reg. of Royal Rifles (1852-1869). Could this be him?

What a lovely photo.  Perhaps someone can give it a clean to get rid of the smeared look.  But it is a wonderful picture.

As far as I understand Rifle brigade(s) usually had black buttons but this looks like a dress uniform so I am unsure of date etc.  Sorry not to be more help.
Are you at liberty to give your  ancestor (in the Rifles) name?.  Maybe someone can find out a little more for you.

Kind regards

Susan

3rd Battalion 65th Reg. of Royal Rifles (1852-1869).

This seems to be a combination of two different regiments. The 60th Regiment were also known as the 60th Rifles or 60th Kings Royal Rifle (Corps). The 65th Regiment were a normal line regiment, the 2nd Yorkshire, North Riding Regiment before 1881, and part of the York and Lancaster Regiment after.

Susan, thank you for your reply, I have his records etc and was trying to put a face to the name.

Ken, thank you, you are so right. On closer inspection of his records 65 was a transcription error on my part from the hand writing. It was indeed the 60th Reg. of Royal Rifles he was in, so sorry.

Any ideas on the uniform?

The 60th Rifles had dark green tunics and scarlet collars and cuffs. They did wear that kind of belt and before 1881 most regiments had that kind of braided cuff. You should ask the regimental museum in Winchester.

Against that he looks to be in his 20s, which would make the photograph late 1850s, and I would have expected more facial hair. Maybe an expert in the Photograph section can help date the photograph. If you do not have the photograph can you ask the owner if there are any details on the back. Also the corners of the photo and mount changed over the years, so photograph experts like to see these as well.

They re-acquired 3rd and 4th Battalions in 1855, so he must have been in either the 1st or 2nd Battalion before then.
