Free census
« on: Thursday 22 August 13 19:33 BST (UK) »
Hi everybody :-) I was wondering if there is a place to look at censuses for free? I used to have a few month subscription to ancestry.co.uk but when it ran out I got more questions to check, but I'm trying to find a way to find answers to my questions without having to buy a full subscription all the time.

Thank you!

There is freecen (www.freecen.org.uk) but it is far from complete

There is also familysearch.org which has several of the censuses

However in both cases you only see a transcription not the original.

If you want to see the originals try your library as a lot of libraries have a subscription to one or other of the pay sites
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I'm not sure whether you've seen it, but the 1911 census is free until the 14th October 2013 :

Kind regards,

Many if not all public libraries give free access to the ancestry.com library edition, although not having your own ancestry.com family tree to hand can make searches that bit more difficult unless to are really focused on where you need to look. Even though my own ancestry.com had expired at the time, by using their free 'app' I was able to load all the information down onto my smart-phone which proved invaluable as a reference source. Worth taking a dongle with you as well to plug in a save any found info' or just send found items to yourself as an email be recovered and/or saved on you smart phone or when you get home. The 'app' as well as giving free access to the 1911 census records for example will also at times let you look at 'hints' others have found and of course allow you to save them to your tree.

No charge, no subscription.

Works for me anyway  ;)
Allanby's, Thompson's and Pannett's of Leeds and Tadcaster.
Streeter's and Kent's of Croydon.
Cavalli's and Cascarini's of Wales and Italy

Wow, that's a really good idea! I will go to the local libraries and check it out. I can do a family tree in a word document and simply download or print-screen the censuses and add to the document. Thank you!
