William SANDELANDS early 18th century
« on: Thursday 22 August 13 17:28 BST (UK) »
William SANDELANDS was christened in Bampton 6 Jan 1689 and he was buried there on 13 July 1734. He married twice. First in 1710 to Jane DAVIS in Witney or Cogges. (The Oxfordshire Marriage Index has two entries on slightly different dates in the two places.) She was buried in Bampton on the 11th December 1728. William left a will that indicates that they had at least 7 children – Grace, Elizabeth, Jane, Ann, John, Sarah and William. William was christened in Bampton on 14 June 1721.
Please, does anyone know where the other six were christened?

His second wife was called Mary. They had three children all baptised at Bampton – Mary on 26 September 1731, Richard on 26 January 1732 (old style) and Richard again (the first one having died) on 30 June 1734.
Please, does anyone know who Mary was? – and where and when they married?

With thanks in advance for any help

Bill

Hi Bill

Looking at the PR's for both St Mary's Church, Cogges and St Marys Church, Witney is puzzling.

The marriage is entered in St Marys Cogges 12 Nov 1710 William Sandylands to Jane Davies both of Witney by Lic. Butttt there is a squggly line through the entry and a couple of others looking like it was crossed out.

The marriage is also entered in St Marys Witney for 23 October 1710 where it just says their names.

I wonder if they were liuving in Cogges got married in Witney then when they toild the church at Cogges it was entered in the PR's then someone over ruled the entry?

I shall look at the baptisms.

Baptisms at St Marys Witney is more productive;

24 Aug 1711 Hester Sandelands s Wm

20 Apr 1714 Elizabeth Sandeland d Wm & Jane

2 Mar 1716 Jane Sandelands d William & Jane

29 April 1719 Anne Sandelands d William & Jane

No others, nor are there any transcribed or possibly recorded in the other Witney town PR's that I have from Oxford Family History Society. You may like to give them a shout and see if there are any on the Oxfordshire Baptism Index which i understand is not yet complete for all the county but the area of your search is done. There may be  small look up fee?

In the regard of William's 2nd marriage it is not listed in the OFHS Marr Index, his 1st one is -.
There is a William from Bampton who marry s Ann Rand on 18 Oct 1763 at Kidlington - that looks like your William and Janes son

By implication of the fact you use accurate dates have you examined or had somebody examine the Bampton PR's?
If you have I shall not do so you see.

Nigel,

Many thanks for all that. It looks as though you have found three of my missing ones plus Hester.

You have also explained why the OMI has two entries for William and Jane's marriage.

As you guessed, Ann Rand married William the son.

- and yes, thanks, I have the disc that has the transcriptions of Bampton PRs.

Renewed thanks,

Bill
