2 lost cousins in Ontario
« on: Wednesday 21 August 13 13:43 BST (UK) »
2 of my grandfatherīs brothers emigrated to Canada.
Charles Davis b 1884 Birmingham married Jessie Florence Sarjent  1913 in Birmingham & emigrated to St Catherine Ontario in 1913 with their baby daughter, also called Jessie Florence.
Charles was killed in 1918 in France.
In 1919 Jessie snr returned to England with young Jessie & went to stay with Charlesīs older brother William & his wife Leah Mary Ann nee Chilton at 14 Woodall Road, Erdington, Birmingham
In 1920, the 2 Jessies & Leah & her daughter Lily went back to Canada.
Jessie snr subsequently re married in Thorold, Ontario to Harry Cotterill.
In 1925, William & Leah were living at 21 Grass Avenue St Catherines Ontario
I have the details of the journeys to & fro & all Charlesīs army records.
Trying to find out if Jessie jnr & Lily married & had children & whether Jessie snr had children with Harry Cotterill.
Please can anyone shed any light?

William Henry (Willie) Cotterill

COTTERILL, William Henry (Willie) - Peacefully, on Monday, December 5th, 2011 at the Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital in his 83rd year. Survived by a brother, and predeceased by sisters Jessie Slingerland (2008) and Doris Wycoff (1978). Willie worked at Provincial Paper for 44 years before retiring in 1981.

Found this Obit, gives Jessie's married name if it's the same family.  Full obit can be found here:

Mark, We cannot name living people so you will have to remove the name of the surviving brother.

Possibilities - Canada Voters List 1940 5 King Street Welland. Ontario 1940 shows Harry Cotterill - Furnace Man and Mrs Harry Cotterill.

Canada Voters List 1972 5 King Street Lincoln Ontario shows Mrs Jessie Cotterill - Widow. 2 sons - showing - Wm Cotterill - Pipe Fitter (now deceased) and another son (who cannot be named because he is still living)  You could try Canada 411 to locate the other son if this happens to be the correct family.

Canada Voters List 1965 - Lists a Doris Wycoff (now deceased) 366 Lawrence Avenue. York Centre.

Could these be possibilities for Jessie  ??? Canada Voters List 1949 - Berryman Ave, Lincoln, Ontario shows Charles Slingerman - Gear Grinder and Mrs Jessie Slingerman.

Canada Voters List 1962/63 - 124 Beech Street Lincoln, Ontario shows Charles Slingerman - Stock Clerk and Mrs Jessie Slingerman, Paper Finisher.

Canada Voters List 1972 - Saint Catherines, Ontario shows Charles Slingerman  (retired) - 124 Beech Street, St Catherine's, Ontario and Mrs Jessie Slingerman.

online directory

www.canada411.ca

just put Cotterill in Surname and Thorold under city, this should bring up the surviving brother/relative.

Slingerland in St. Catharines will bring up results.

There is only one result for Wycoff and it is in Manitoba.

Here is an obituary for Jessie Slingerland who died 2 Jan 2008:
http://yourlifemoments.ca/sitepages/obituary.asp?oId=207739

It mentions her late husband and sister and her two surviving brothers but there's no mention of children.

Thanks very much all of you.
Think Jessie Slingerland was possibly Jessie Davis. Death would have been too recent for it to have been her mother.
Will have a good look at the links.
