George Smith & Rodha Ann 19th century
« on: Tuesday 20 August 13 20:19 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm wondering if someone can help me, I'm trying to trace my great, great grandparents. They were Romany Gypsy's. I'm looking for more information on Rodha Ann (no surname known) so far I've found her only in the 1881 census
 - Age 29 residence Colne, Lancashire. Birth place stated about 1852 Barnsley

She was also known as Rodianne according to the birth certificate of daughter Angelina.

She had children with George Smith:
Angelina Smith (1872), Nicholis smith (1874), Eliza Smith (1877), Isaac Smith (1881) and Ada Smith (1883)

Can anyone help with finding her surname,  marriage record and death, I'd like to be able to go further up the tree with her. It looks like she died between 1883 and 1891 as George appears on the 1891 census as married to "Cloder" from Barnsley. They were residence in Rochdale, Lancashire at the time and had Thom Smith (1881). Cannot find them on any more census records or their marriage certificate.

More about George Smith:
Born approx 1853, 1 census record states "Bucknunston, Rutland", the other one states "Willowby, Rutland". I can't find anything further on George and would love to find his birth, death, marriages(s) certificates and any other census records with him in them.

Hope someone can help, thanks!

Hi just for reference, the birth place of " Cloder" b c 1849 in 1891 is the same as Rhoda ie Barnsley, a bit of a coincidence they were both born in same area?

Hi'

Cloder could in fact be an Enumerator's bad hearing or a Transcriber's bad spelling and be Clodagh English as Clo-da and that name is Irish in origin so who you seek perhaps was from Ireland if it is anyhelp.

Thanks for all your help everyone  :)

I'm looking into the idea that Rodha Ann & Cloder are the same person but the original census records are quite clear and I think they are different but it's strange they are both born in Burnley albeit 4 years apart.

I've ordered their daughters marriage certificate as I can't find any more information as yet, hopefully this will shed some light on the surname of Rodha Ann

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far. I went back through Baptism records and can confirm Rodha Ann (also know as Rodianne) and Cloder are in fact the same person! So that's one mystery solved!

I'm still trying to trace Rodha Ann and George though, I can't seem to find any information on their marriage. I have found baptism records for younger 4 of their children but no birth records for any of the children. If I could get the birth record I could order the certificate and get Rodha's maiden name. Can anyone help?
