Look up requested for KEARNS in Manchester c 1885
« on: Monday 19 August 13 18:44 BST (UK) »
Hi
I would appreciate any assistance locating a relative named Kearns ( possibly James),who may have owned /leased a store in Manchester between 1878 and 1885 roughly !
His wife's name may have been Marion Morrison(or Morrissey) and they had 2 children, Mary born in 1878 and Willie in 1883.
They would most likely be Catholic and both died (during some epidemic) around 1885.  My greatgrandfather (Thomas Murphy, or my grandfather Matthew Murphy) took both children to Ireland and raised them, as I believe they were Thomas'  niece and  nephew.

Would there be records of adoption ?(not sure if there was a formal adoption).

I was able to find both "children" in Ireland in the 1901 census, but not sure what year they arrived.

Any information re the parents would be very much appreciated.

( This request was originally opened in a different Forum, but I'm not sure how to link to it).  I'm a bit technologically challenged at my age.   :-[

Thank you,
Sarah

Hello,

your other post was hidden away in here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=656401.msg5037728#msg5037728. You have some information there, I think.

Thanks to all for your very prompt replies.  I'm thinking that the entry in 1881 posted by Jool is the most likely candidate.
The marriage date posted by Fairlane sounds likely as does the entry for Willie posted by Radcliff.
Thanks to mosiefish also, but I don't think that sounds like my relatives.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned a flu or other epidemic in the area in the late 1880's. Am I misinformed about that possibility?

Next step would be, where do i look to find possible death certificates for James and Marion.

Again, my thanks to all for your quick responses.
Sarah

Hi,

I only posted the 4 year old Mary Kearns as an alternative as you said your Mary was born 1873 or 1878  :-\. Also by 1891 this 14 year year old Mary Ann Kearns was in an industrial school.

Anyway there is a death registered for a Marian Kearns in the sub district of Stretford in 1888 aged 42 which is probably the Marion in the 1881 census.  See www.lancashirebmd.org.uk.

Regards,
Mo
