Barnes Family - East Sussex
« on: Monday 19 August 13 18:06 BST (UK) »
 8)  I have traced one line of my ancestry to the Barnes family from east Sussex - and have not had much luck once I found them - and help appreciated - my ancestors are mainly from Battle, Brede, Ticehurst, Heathfield area.

Edward "Old Bestney" Barnes (1490 - 1551)
son of Alice Lancaster
Thomas Barnes (1520 - 1548)
son of Edward "Old Bestney" Barnes
Edward BARNES (1555 - 1657)
son of Thomas Barnes
William Barnes (1580 - 1657)
son of Edward BARNES
John Barnes (1608 - 1671)
son of William Barnes
John Barnes (1634 - 1638)
son of John Barnes
William Barnes (1676 - 1747)
son of John Barnes
Samuel Barnes (1706 - 1793)
son of William Barnes
Thomas Barnes (1749 - 1780)
son of Samuel Barnes
Mary Barnes (1768 - 1840)
daughter of Thomas Barnes

Thanks for any help offered - I am quite new to this.

I think you need to check some of those dates.
Quote
Edward BARNES (1555 - 1657)
died at 102 ?

Quote
John Barnes (1634 - 1638)
son of John Barnes
William Barnes (1676 - 1747)
son of John Barnes
Father can't be John who died aged 4 so is he the same John having 2 children 42 years apart ?

Where has all of this come from ?

Hi David,

I started to look at qualifying some of the information you have given starting with Mary this is what I have from the Sussex Family History Group and the Sussex Marriage Index.

Thomas Barnes m Elizabeth Austen 1768 Ticehurst
•   Mary Barnes bap 5 Jun 1766 Heathfield and then again 24 Oct 1772 at the age of 5 probably as the couple were properly married at that point

Samuel Barnes m Mary Coleman 26 May 1736 Brede
•   Thomas Barnes bap 5 Nov 1749 Brede

William Barnes m Sarah Gill 15 Apr 1697 Ewhurst
•   Samuel Barnes bap 16 Oct 1706 Ewhurst

John Barne m Sarah Davy 12 Apr 1664 Peasmarsh
•   William Barnes 27 Jan 1676 Beckley

I then couldn't find a John Barnes born in 1634 instead there was one in Battle in 1635.
The problem I guess I have with the tree is there is no information linking together each generation other than the name of the father in each case. It is strange but not unusual that each generation is born in a different place, will depend on the occupation of the father.
It might be an idea if you give us the name of a relative in this branch you are sure about the information for and we can help you work backwards.

There's Ancestry info saying Edward Barnes B.1490 Cambs. married Margaret Bestney in 1509 Lancs.
Parents James Barnes b.1460 Lancs. & Alice Lancaster.
No qualifying info.

A comment from across "The Pond" in Washington State, USA…  :) My cousin has been doing an ancestry on the Barnes's for me. Here's what we found:

Edward Barnes (1490-1551) married Margaret Bestney (1490-1553). They had a son Thomas Barnes (1515-1557) who married Anne Thimblethorpe (1525-1557). Anne and Thomas had a son Edward Barnes (1544-1615) who married Dorothy Drury (1558-1615). Dorothy's Grandfather was Sir William Drury (1515-1557).

If my cousin has done this correctly he's traced the Barnes's back as far as John Barnes (1120- ?) who married Elizabeth Stoner (1125- ?).

I sent my DNA off to National Geographic and had it analyzed too. The results were very interesting. Some I knew but the really old Barnes stuff I had no idea. You should do it. ;)

Quote
John Barnes (1608 - 1671)
son of William Barnes
John Barnes (1634 - 1638)
son of John Barnes
William Barnes (1676 - 1747)
son of John Barnes

Neither of the John Barnes can be the father of William Barnes. The first John died 5 years before William was born and the second died aged 4  - 38 years before William was born.
