ARMY SERVICE CORPS WW1
« on: Monday 19 August 13 17:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help with the following notes on a Service Record Card.

The soldier in question was a Blacksmith by Trade and militarily was in the Mechanical Transport Companies. His record says that he was part of the 177 Company but that cannot be correct as he went to France in July 1915 and I believe they went to Egypt.

The annotations are:-

Expeditionary Force France (177 Co) - 6-7-15 - 7-9-18

Posted to 4 ATSC (or Col)

5 Aux P Boy??

3 ATSC

FS Col??

Can anyone throw any light on these?

Thanks

Is his record on Ancestry/FindMyPast?  If so - it might be better to give details of who he was etc so the record can be viewed on screen

According to the Long Long Trail the 177 Mechanical Transport Company was formed in January 1915 as part of the 13th Western Division. They began landing at Cape Helles on 6th July 1915 - which would seem to fit the date of entry for your man.

See: http://www.1914-1918.net/13div.htm

Can you confirm that your man's record has Expeditionary Force France and not Expeditionary Force Mediterranean?

It was definitely the BEF as by 7 July 1915, he was in Rouen possibly at the ASC Base Depot.  The information I have is taken from amongst other sources, from Ancestry.

The soldier in question is Private Thomas Frederick Hughes born 1893 in Sheffield before moving to Horbury near Wakefield. He enlisted on 20 March 1915.

Thanks for your help.
