1891 census - BROOKS

Please could someone help me find my gt. grandfather Ambrose Brooks. He was born in 1857 in Artington, Guildford and married Annie Wilkie in Southwark in 1884. However neither he nor his father, Stephen Brooks (born 1819 in Shipley, Sussex) come up on a search of the 1881 census.

Stephen was still in Artington in 1861, and Ambrose appears in Croydon in 1901, but I have a blank on their whereabouts between those dates.

Thank you so much Joe. That is certainly him because I did know that he had a brother Cyrus. With his mother remarrying by 1871 and then him being widowed and living with his brother in 1891, I would never have found them without you.

Possible connection with your Ambrose, his brother Edwin could be my great grandfather, Edwin Brooks was a firewood dealer and had a son Albert Brooks.  I know that Edwin was born approx 1858, would appreciate any confirmation of this side of the Brooks family you can help me with. Thanks Patti G

Hi Patti

I would need a bit more information before I could connect your Edwin with my Ambrose. Ambrose certainly had a brother Edwin, who was born about 1855 in Guildford, Surrey, but that Edwin died in 1872 at the age of 17. He was an apprentice printer compositor and not a firewood dealer and as he died aged 17 I think it unlikely that he had a son called Albert. Perhaps you could elaborate a bit further.

Hi Peter, think I'm clutching at straws here.  Obviously wrong family.  Bit of a blow Brooks is such a common name isn't?  My Edwin Brooks I believe was born in Loughborough Leicestershire UK in 1858.  He had several children, Albert (my grandfather and married to Alice Moore) Annie,  Thomas, Emma, Edith. From the census records and family info I know he was a firewood dealer, and for the record believe he had one leg ! Well, that's about it.  Thanks anyway, Regards from Down Under, Patti
