You have caught up with me now. Hows that?? I can pinpoint his grave, and think he has one of his wives buried with him. The photograph you have that someone put on this programme is taken from the spot where I believe he is buried - or near enough to it. I think the earliest graves went from the road to the river along the fence line, and only one had a headstone and that is written up in McKay's book Historic Poverty Bay. That was for a Mr U'ren. That headstone is probably with the 500 odd that are in the river. The naughty boys who worked for Cook County Council were supposed to put the fallen or near fallen headstones along the fence line but they didnt, they put them in the river, and the broke the foundations of a lot of others so they fell over too. They even had two auctions of the wrought iron. AND, this Council wont accept responsibility for what its forbears did. They are putting all sorts of barriers up in the hope that we wont proceed with this project. At the moment we are scrubbing the headstones and then putting wet and forget of 30 second on them so we can get an accurate record of what is there now - a lot of new ones and replacement ones. The earthquake did a lot of damage, but that was 5 years ago. The above damage was done between 1965 and 1982 with most 1972/74 Cheers. Dot
