Old Makaraka Cemetery, Gisborne
« on: Sunday 18 August 13 04:58 BST (UK) »
Hi

One of my ancestors was buried in Old Makaraka cemetery near Gisborne on 17 April 1865. The Gisborne City council only has records from 1877 for Makaraka. Is there any other way to find out if a plot still exists for Thomas Halbert

Thanks in advance.

Hi Janette

Thanks. I have that article and a few others from the period. The story seems to have been reported over a few months.

Hi, I too have ancestors buried in Makaraka cemetery.  A decade or so ago an earthquake damaged many headstones and I understand the Gisborne council bulldozed them into a hollow, so now the cemetery is mostly grass with a few headstones here and there.  I shall try to attach a picture!

What a great picture! I read elsewhere that a local historical society was re-erecting some of the headstones.

Ive ordered what I hope is the death certificate of Thomas Halbert to confirm that he was buried there and if his plot is still there although with news that some were bulldozed it doesnt give me much hope

Cheers

Can you tell me please if he had a wife, and if she was eventually buried with him?   I am with the local Genealogy Group/Friends of Makaraka cemetery, and we have been trying to get the Council to agree to uplifting some 88 headstones from a trench, and they have got us tied in knots, but we have a couple of aces up our sleeve.  I am interested in all burials at that cemetery, and the Council refer people to me to find where their relatives are buried.   Cheers.

Hi There

Thank you for your message. Thomas had 6 wives! Thomas would have been one of the first people to be buried in this cemetery. I dont think any were buried with him but I dont know where any of them are buried.

I visited Gisborne recently but didnt allocate enough time to visit Makaraka as I have other relatives there in unmarked graves - the Cuff family plus a McGaveston family member.

I did visit the Gisborne library who told me I should contact Dot McCulloch who is the cemetery expert as she may be able to tell me where Thomas was buried - hes not listed on the old maps. I still havent caught up on a few other genealogical lines so I havent found her contact info or emailed her.

This is a bit about Thomas

You have caught up with me now.  Hows that??   I can pinpoint his grave, and think he has one of his wives buried with him.  The photograph you have that someone put on this programme is taken from the spot where I believe he is buried - or near enough to it.   I think the earliest graves went from the road to the river along the fence line, and only one had a headstone and that is written up in McKay's book Historic Poverty Bay. That was for a Mr U'ren.  That headstone is probably with the 500 odd that are in the river.   The naughty boys who worked for Cook County Council were supposed to put the fallen or near fallen headstones along the fence line but they didnt, they put them in the river, and the broke the foundations of a lot of others so they fell over too.  They even had two auctions of the wrought iron.  AND, this Council wont accept responsibility for what its forbears did. They are putting all sorts of barriers up in the hope that we wont proceed with this project.  At the moment we are scrubbing the headstones and then putting wet and forget of 30 second on them so we can get an accurate record of what is there now - a lot of new ones and replacement ones.   The earthquake did a lot of damage, but that was 5 years ago.  The above damage was done between 1965 and 1982 with most 1972/74 Cheers.   Dot

Now that is fortuitous!

There are lots of us ancestors of Thomas and some of us who would like to be able to pay our respect to our common ancestor. A great shame there is no headstone. If you could pinpoint the exact spot Id be interested in getting a memorial plaque done

I remember reading further about what the council did. I really couldn't believe that any council would do that and also that they wouldn't fix it after acknowledging it was wrong.

Ill send you a private message with my email address. Im not too sure if theres anything I could do to help but would like to know more.
