William Bell - Dryfesdale, Dumfries
« on: Sunday 18 August 13 00:50 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on William Bell and his family. Records I have located in Canada document his birth to be between 1821 and 1827.

Known timeline
11 May 1851 - Marriage banns posted in Dryfesdale, Dumfries for "William Bell in this parish and Ann Grierson in the parish of Applegarth"
13 May 1851 - Marriage banns posted in Sibbaldbie for "William Bell in Dryfesdale and Ann Grierson in this Parish, Proclaimed two days married elsewhere"
1852 - Canada Census records William, his wife (Anne) and daughter (Jennet) to be living in Pickering, Ontario, Canada

ScotlandsPeople list a William Bell (age 25) in the 1851 census for Dryfesdale, Dumfries. When I purchased the record to view the census document is empty of any entries. I purchased the page before and after still with no entries. The 'Gros Data' is listed as 820/00 003/00 009. Is anyone able to check the 1851 census and find this William Bell and his information?

I appreciate any effort made to help me.

Thanks,

Shaun

Contact SP and tell them this - they should be able to give you the information if they have got it indexed.

However, I have looked on 3 other sites (transcription only) and none have a William Bell aged 25 in Dryfesdale.

I agree with Annette - that's the best solution.

Meantime though.....hmmmmmmm:

1851: Hillside, Dryfesdale
Jessie BELL 25, male, House Servant, b Moffat Dumfries
Parish 820,
ED1
Page 3
HS 8
Line 9

The person listed above is a female visitor to the household, named Jessie.  I wonder if it is an error, and in fact this is 'William' as indexed on SP?

Compare to  your reference of: 820/00 003/00 009.

I have found the following info on their children (from a 2010 posting of your search plus 1871 Canada Census), plus compelling evidence that Ann's parents were named William & Janet.
http://shrinkalink.com/66261
- Janet Bell 1852 – 1938
- William Bell 1854
- Margaret Bell1856
- Annie Bell 1859 – 1935
- Francis Bell  1863
- Jeannie A. Bell 1865 –
- Robert Bell 1870 – 1908
- John Bell - b 8 Feb 1874  (mother Ann died after his birth)

Based on Scottish naming pattern, I'd certainley be considering William's parents to be name William and Margaret - but this is just a tool and only a possibility, they may not have followed the pattern - or the children above are not representing the pattern (missing  or deceased children etc)!

Cheers
