There is a general theory now that Padraig Pearse may have been homosexual, or at the very least celibate.  RTE ran a series about his previously unknown private life, and I don't think there was any mention of girlfriends.

Could he have been bisexual, or was that illegal along with homosexuality?

Probably was illegal. If this friend is who she says she is, the Irish Media will be in a frenzy  if you search around google a bit you'll see the  worship and admiration that Irish people held for the Pearse brothers.  Every part of  Patrick Pearse's life, his thoughts and ideals have been scrutinised and studied.
