Foley Chinnor
« on: Thursday 15 August 13 18:10 BST (UK) »
Dear All,
I was wondering if you may be able to help me regarding a look-up for a Foley from Chinnor Oxfordshire.  William Foley is listed in the England Census 1871 and 1881 as having been born in 1846 in Chinnor, yet I can find no corresponding record for him.  His father is John Foley http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=lmamarriages&h=2535095&ti=5538&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t34038739_p20001392952_kpidz0q3d20001392952z0q26aidz0q3d156987402119z0q26pgz0q3d32771z0q26pgplz0q3dpidz0q257caid as listed in this marriage certificate.  I cannot find a John Foley residing in Chinnor in 1841/51 either.  If you could help get me a tad further I would be most grateful.
Kind regards
L

So maybe he was brought up in Chinnor, however maybe he was not born/baptised there, it is very close to the border so I would spread the search a little, can you find any Foley's in Chinnor at all and remember he may have been off visiting friends, family elsewhere on census night

2 possible birth regs.  for William Folley.

O/N/D - 1847.  Wycombe district.  V.6. Page.381
A/M/J - 1846.  Wycombe district.  V.6. Page. 4.

There is a William Folly c1848. Stokenchurch, Oxfordshire, in the 1851 census.  It appears he is the son of Richard c1825. Stokenchurch.

BUT............ I think he is the son of Seticca[Letitia] Folly, c1821. Stokenchurch, who is in the same household.  He could be the one born 1847.

Stokenchurch is in the reg district of Wycombe.

I cannot see any other birth registrations for William Foley/Folley/Folly.

I've checked OxFHS - Chinnor PR's, and no William Folly baptised there. :(

Sorry, that's the best I can come up with.

Steve. :)

PS. If he was illegitimate, he may have told porky pies about his father. ;)

Leticia Folly was baptised 1821 @ Stokenchurch.  Daughter of WILLIAM & Susannah.

Richard Folly appears to be her brother, according to his 1824 baptism @ Stokenchurch.

The mystery is solved.  Leticia was indeed William Folley/Folly/Foley's mother and he was illegitimate.  I found something last night on ancestry that confirms it.  WF's father was blind from birth and a young jailbird for a time. It's my first ancestor that I have a bit of fleshing out on so thank you all kindly for your efforts.  William was indeed distancing himself from the Folly name in changing it to Foley.  And there was me thinking that I was a fair bit Irish!  Cant wait to get up to Oxfordshire FHS and check out the records which confirm all this.
Kind regards

Dear Steve
I notice on your list of names that you have Allen in Oxfordshire.  I too have Allen's from Oxon in my tree.  I know from research there were a few Allen's knocking about in Oxfordshire.  My line comes down through a Hercules Allen, which is a great name to have in my ancestry ;).  Does this name ring any bells to you.  Anyhow It seems I am more Oxfordian than Irish at any rate.

No, Hercules Allen does not appear in my mob.   Mine are almost all in Bucks, but  there is the odd one from Oxfordshire(don't ask me where from. ;D ).......but, I'll check anyway.

As for William Foley......the surname is just a variation of Folly etc.......not a conscious effort to change it and vanish. ;D
