Mary Degan Born On., Canada
« on: Thursday 15 August 13 18:10 BST (UK) »
Mary Degan as I believe was born in 1822 ( ? ) I have confirmation from Ancestry that Mary was
born in a very remote part of northern Ontario. At their most southern points of the Drowning
River & Little Drowning River, approx. 1/2 way between. To the east of the Drowning River is a  small community called Nakina. Just north of Nakina is Twin Lake & Wababimige Lake & to the far west of Little Drowning River is Jog Lake & the Kenogami River. The Cree Nation Lives here as well & this whole area is also called the drainage basin for James Bay.

Mary Degan was married to William Dodman b. 1821 Norfolk County, Snettisham, Eng. Mary &
William were married in All Saints Church, Brantford, Brant County, On., in 1841. Mary & William
left Brant County & settled in Kent County, Zone Twp, Thamesville, On. Where they lived for
the rest of their days. Mary passed in 1874 & William passed 1875. They R.I.P. Sherman
 Cemetery, Thamesville On.

I am interested in finding whom Mary's parents were & any siblings she may have had + an
actual birthdate if 1822 is incorrect.

Thank You Very Much For Taking Time With This Post!!!!!!!!!!

A few ideas (no offense intended if you already knew this stuff):

I believe if she was born where you say, that would have been Rupert's Land, and under Hudson Bay Company control.  The trading post near Nakina and the reserve were likely the closest places to the fur trapping and/or Courier operation.  I would search Hudson Bay records.

My searches for Groesbec ancestors found me in the same general area... the family were fur traders and their children were translators for Indian contacts.  I would not be surprised if the mother was along on the trip as a translator or was, in fact, from the reserve.  Perhaps a call to the reserve may give some answers.

Also, the Indian Affairs "Ministers" kept very good records and they can be accessed at archives Canada.  Just a quick search for the name Degan revealed a Joseph Degan (Fr Canadian) married to a woman listed as "Metis" around the time you are searching.

Since most of the Courier Du Bois travelled back and forth to Quebec, perhaps you could search the Drouin collection for baptism and birth registrations.  You may get lucky and find that the grandparents lived in Quebec while the sons did the trading.

Good Luck!

Mark

Eh Mark: Thank You very much for your reply & all the leads you listed!!!!!!!! I will work on this very hard now & will certainly let you know how I make out. If Joseph Degan is Mary's father, this
is a major breakthrough in my genealogy work!!!! I do know that Mary had Fr. ethnic in her. But
as far as her mother, I do not know anything, whether she is  " Metis!!!! " Or not, but, what you found, is as good as what I knew, meaning " NOT MUCH!!!!!!!!! "

   Yours Truly
   Jeff

In Search box, I entered Joseph Degan tos ee what would come up

Scrip affidavit for Linnen, Elizabeth: born 1835; wifeof John Linnen; father - Joseph Degan (French Canadian); mother - Marie Chatelain (Metis)
claim no: 1688; scrip no: 10591
date of issue: Sept 20, 1876: amount $160.
RG15-D-11-8-a

If you click on the Mikan No, you should bring up the images for the scrip and also information on the Metis children who were eligible to apply.

This may be no relation to your Mary but another lead to pursue.

Hi again!

Here is the 1826 marriage certificate for Joseph Degane=Adelaide Tiho dit Ducharme as an example of the records found in the Drouin Collection.  I searched for the earliest birth record I could find for Degan, and found John Degan - born 1827. There are several forms of the last name.

Also, of perhaps more interest, are the witnesses - Jean Baptiste Degane and Alexis Degane (Joseph's parents).  A search for their marriage certificate may get a better grasp of the family tree, which may be published.
