Hello Chas,

I looked in Griffiths Valuation http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php and found no McGuckins. A look at Surname Search was more productive. http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm  Not much I know, but better than nothing. It may get you started

Best Wishes, Chris

Hi Christopher,
Thanks for the nudge up, as you say, every little helps. I still have not found out what became of Joseph & Ellen, another rellie tells me she has found their D.C's, six weeks ago and counting  ???. Still no proof or copies, or even a clue as to where she found them. Given up holding my breath.
Thanks again, Chas.

Good Afternoon Chas,

I had a go at a variation on the spelling McGoogan.  I searched Surname Search using this name and it offered variations of spelling including the fact there were 71 McGuckins in Ireland during the time of Griffiths Valuation (1848-64)

I owe you an apology for my stupidity. I must remember this for the future.
I wonder if others have made a similar mistake?
I was looking at the words " There are NO exact matches".
"There are NO matches starting with the search string". This one makes me wonder how many I have led astray. I also looked in the Directory of Belfast
and Province of Ulster 1852. There are definitely no McGuckins in Derry in
that volume. Maybe Anthony can find something in one of his Directories.

Good Luck with this search,

Christopher

How sure are you of the birth date of Joseph?  There were Joseph McGuckins born in 1868. and 1872,  and quite a number of Joseph McGuckin marriages both in the Magherafelt and Cookstown areas.  A lot of folks from the Magherafelt area married and baptised in Cookstown.  It seems to have been a popular name with the McGuckins and is found more frequently in that family than most.

The McGuckin surname sort of morphed from Maguigan which was spelled Maguikgan in later records and later still McGuckin.  There is a Townland in Artrea, not far from Magherafelt which is Ballymaguigan, eg Maguigan's Town.

Chasward hasn't been online since June 2008.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
