Jane Darby born 1825 but no baptism?

I would like help please in finding the baptism of Jane Darby born (according to censuses) around 1825 in the Ratfield Cross/Shadwell/Whitechapel area.

What I have found so far is:

When she married John Bone on 16 May 1842 at St Dunstan and All Angels, Stepney she gave her father's name as Charles, his occupation as blacksmith, but this information has not helped me find out anything more. I can't find a marriage for Charles or any siblings for Jane let alone her baptism.

When she married she declared she was "of full age" but if she was born around 1825 that would mean she was only about 17.

One of her witnesses was an Elizabeth Goodeve. I have found that she was the daughter of Charles Goodeve who married Sarah Darby on 11 November 1817 at St Mary, Whitechapel. I've found a Sarah Derly baptised at St Marys, Whitechapel on 21 October 1812 but born 20 January? 1796, the daughter of Charles and Rachel of Alie Street, Whitechapel. They married at St Katherine by the Tower 6 September 1793 which looks like it is close to Wapping.

So I was tempted to think Sarah could well have been Jane's aunt, the sister of Jane's father Charles - but she seems to have been the only child of Charles and Rachel that I can find. Jane and Elizabeth would then have been first cousins. Another clue to a close family connection is that Jane's daughter Emily's marriage was witnessed by Elizabeth Goodeve's daughter Amy Sargent (making them 2nd cousins?).

So that's as far as I've been able to get. Can anyone please help?

and had worked on the basis that Jane must have been closely related to Sarah Goodeve nee Darby, whose mother was Rachel Darby. Now the death certificate states that Sarah Goodeve, the informant, declared herself to be the sister of widow Rachel, not the daughter!

Is it really likely the registrar made a mistake in thinking the daughter then aged about 44 was the sister of the deceased then aged 67, particularly when I haven't found any siblings for Sarah? I'm so confused.

I think it probably wasn't a mistake?

It may have been that Sarah may well have been Rachel's illegitimate daughter, brought up as a 'sister' as a 'cover-up'?

Yes, Rachel married Charles Darby in 1793 and Sarah was born to Rachel and Charles in 1796 and for some reason not baptised until 1812. So, Annie, are you suggesting Sarah was really born pre 1793 and the birth date at her much delayed baptism fudged? That sounds possible although it looks like even with a 1796 birth date she lived to a very old age dying in 1888 aged 91. Add another 3 years on and that makes 94. In the East End!

I wish I could work out where Jane comes from though. There seems to be a curious lack of children belonging to Charles and Rachel which makes Jane's parentage very difficult to pin down. I can't see how she is related but she must be looking at the witnesses I mentioned previously. Her own first daughter was named Rachel which may or may not be a pointer (Sarah of course had a daughter named Rachel in 1838).

Correction: thanks to the new GRO index I've found that Jane's first daughter was in fact Jane Rebecca. So no help there

I think it may be better to have the 2 topics merged as it would be far easier to follow.

You can click on the button "Report to Mod" & ask for a merge but you need to supply the link to the original topic or vice versa with the original as jumping back & forward from one to the other is more trouble/more time for people to grasp the whole scenario with different names/dates.

Far easier to understand when all on one page & being able to revert back?

Meanwhile, is it possible that Sarah & Jane are the same person as in Sarah Jane but using both names at different times, possibly to differentiate between another relative?

No they're definitely two different people. Sarah Goodeve nee Darby 1796 - 1888 and Jane Bone nee Darby c1825 - 1879.
