Newnham's in Sussex
« on: Wednesday 07 August 13 07:07 BST (UK) »
Hi
I've been away from family research for a while but just starting it back up again! I've recently had an unexpected breakthrough following going on a tour of broadwater cemetery in worthing (highly recommend) and just happened to come across a grave I'd been looking for!
I'm continuing my research of Newnham's in Sussex, and now concentrating on those that moved from cuckfield area to worthing in 1900 ish.
I also wanted to offer my services to others to look at/photograph addresses and graves in the broadwater area of worthing. Please pm or email me and I'll be happy to help!
Glad to be back,
Kim

Hi

This is really more a case of can you help me I'm afraid - rather cheeky so feel free to ignore it.

I'm also looking at Newnhams in Sussex, specifically the familly of Mary Newnham, daughter of Peter & Ann.  She was born in Hixted in 1826 & married James Apted in Reigate in 1852 which is where she seems to have lived the remainder of her life.  I think that Peter's wife was Ann Sayers, born 1807 in Twineham & married to Peter in 1825 in Brighton, & that her parents Samuel & Mary came from Cuckfield. I think that Peter's was born in Slaugham & his parents were John & Sarah.  I've found these records online, & haven't been able to confirm - do you have any idea if I'm looking at the correct people?

Many thanks

Hi
These names don't appear in any research I've done into Newnham's, but if they do I will certainly let you know!

Hi,
I can't find a baptism for Samuel Sayers in Cuckfield.  Do you have a date?   John Sayers and Esther  Comber married in 1757 and have numerous children baptised in the 1760s/70s.

Samuel Sayers married Mary Simmons in Twineham 17 Sep 1800.   botp   Witnesses Mary Sayers, Elizabeth Simmons.
John Newnham married Sarah Hards 23 Jan 1785 at Slaugham.  He is a bachelor of Cuckfield (signs Newnu,) and she is otp.  Witnesses Barbey Bchley (as on transcript) and Wm Beckeley

Hi Kim

Thanks for this, both marriage dates new to me, as was Sarah's surname.  I don't have a birth date for Samuel - although another tree on Ancestry gives him born as 1780, Cuckfield, son of Henry & Mary Walnut.  Don't have any independent evidence for this though so I'm not sure how reliable it is.

The marriage for Henry Sayers and Mary Walnut was in 1770 in Shermanbury so the chances of their having a son in Cuckfield are slim.  Not impossible, but unlikely as it is some distance away.  I will check the Cuckfield register again.
Henry Sayers and a Mary did have a son Samuel baptised at Warnham in 1785 so maybe that is the one?  He would be a bit young to be marrying in 1800 though.
