Miners in Wednesfield 1840-1900
« on: Monday 05 August 13 17:56 BST (UK) »
Hi, both my gg grandad and g grandad were miners in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton. If possible I would like to find out more about where they worked, if these collieries would have any records surviving and if so where I could access them. I am talking between 1840-1900.

Many thanks

Andrea

Wednesfield mines were part of the South Staffordshire Coalfield, and a list of mines can be found here: http://projects.exeter.ac.uk/mhn/1896-B3.htm

Ashmore Park
Beacon
Neachills
New Cross

I would expect that any surviving records would be at Staffordshire Archives?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thank you for the quick reply, I can see now where the Prestwood road may have got its name from.Although interesting it does only give information for 1896. Do you think Wolverhampton archives would have  any records, I suppose what I am looking for is a list of names of the men that would have worked in these mines and possibly their employment records. Does this information even exist, would it have been recorded?

Well, I have never found any information re my grandfather, who worked in the Bristol coalfields and South Wales!
All these mines were privately owned, and mostly small. I suspect that they didn't keep much in the way of records!

Wolverhampton RO might be a good place to ask, though.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cmhrc/list80.htm#SOUTH%20STAFFORDSHIRE gives a list of mines from 1880.

Additional Wednesfield mines:
Ashmore Park
Dean's Old
Perry Hall
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

There are a few mining links under "Trades & Occupations" on the Staffordshire Resources board which may possibly be of interest:
