From LUSTLEIGH, DEVON to MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY

Philip Herbert Scott was born in Lustleigh, Devon, in 1851.

The family tale is that Uncle Herbert, as he was known, became a veterinary surgeon and after a time in South Africa settled in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he made his fortune.  That he lived there is proven by two large early C20th photographs of his villa and a portrait photo taken of him in the city in April 1876.  Family visited him in Montevideo in 1911, although the following year he was in London.

But what became of him?  Did he marry or die in Montevideo?  He is not listed in the British Cemetery, as far as on-line listings reveal.

On the UK Death Register for 1915, a Philip Herbert Scott, born c.1850, is listed at in the Poole, Dorset District.  Could this be him, returned to England at the end of his life?  (Not inclined to pay out for a certificate yet, until I can be more confident this is him.)

So is anybody else researching this family?  I'm stuck as to how to pursue Uncle Herbert's life in Montevideo further, so any ideas are welcome!

The probate for the 1915 death gives his address as Old Farm, Parkstone Road, Poole -died 26 November 1915 Probate to Frank Hudson retired civil engineer Effects £4887-17s-6d

Frank Hudson was my late mother in law's great uncle who lived in Poole after his return from Uruguay where he had worked for a time with the Central Uruguay Railway Company of Montevideo, Ltd. It would seem possible that he met P H Scott in Uruguay and they remained in contact after both had returned to England.

Frank was back in England by 1911 I believe.

This is great, Pete.  Seems to clinch that this was indeed my Uncle Herbert - though it seems odd that probate was granted to Frank, when Herbert had brothers living to whom we know he was close.

Perhaps he named Frank Hudson as executor as he was working with him and in closer contact with him than his family back in England.  The will would show how he distributed his money.
