Second Boer War

My grandfather is Charles Frederick Nutman b 1878, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

I have picked him up on every census and have also found his WW1 Merchant Seaman record and Medals Card.  Just as I thought that I was getting a complete picture of him a 'cover all' serach on Google has come up with a possible match in 'The Men of the Imperial Yeomanry, Lovats Scouts and Scottish Horse in the Boer War 1899 to 1902'.

He is listed as Nutman, Charles Frederick 41823, Trooper* 36th Bn IY.

How can I find out if this is the same man and if so more about him.

He is listed as being at 29 Raby Street, Gateshead in the 1901 Census.  I also understand that the 33rd to 38th Battalions arrived in South Africa after the armistice and therefore did not receive QSA medals.

Can anybody help ?

I have just looked on FindMyPast and found that his Battalion did not deply to South Africa.

Still interested to know anything about the Imperial Yeomanry and where he might have enlisted/trained etc.

assuming it is him, of course.

Have a browse for background - I couldn't find any reference to a Nutman I'm afraid.

Thank you for helping.  These are the two I have found as well.

As he was in Gateshead/Newcastle area, I am now investgating the Northumberland Imperial Yeomanry which also includes Durham.  I 've found lots of background which is good.

Happy to help - I 'discovered' a great uncle fought in the 2nd Boer war in the Bethunes as a surprise so I understand how you feel.

There does seem to be little out there though.

hi,,,there is also a militia record for him,,,,he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1906,,,,was not present for training by the following year.The record gives a brief description of him,and notes he had a tattoo of a female on his left forearm in memory of his mother  ;)

Firstly I need to be sure it is the same man but on the assumption that it is, I need some guidance.  I hope you can help!
