Thank you for your comments. I was in Scotland for a short time in June, but never managed it to the John Grey centre. I was in touch with them a couple of years ago, and they told me John Beaumont died a pauper and was buried by the church. They could give me no more details. The last census in 1841 I wondered about, could have been some sort of poorhouse? It listed all kinds of single people??? I hope to get over to Scotland next year and Haddington is definitely on the cards.
