What is this object?
« on: Friday 02 August 13 00:40 BST (UK) »
Hi
Bit of a mystery, what is this object that appears to be worn on this ladys mourning dress.
It looks a little like a gas cylinder but think this wont be the case, so what could it be.??

Hi Mahalia

You could be right, I have just had a look online at different chatelaine's and in some cases they carry a spectacles case and some of them do look something like this, very interesting learning something new that I didn't know five mins ago.
Thank you.

David.

How do you know it's a mourning dress?

Because I doubt it.

Cheers,

China will tell you it's because it's not black & it's unlikely adornments would have been worn if she was in mourning.

A chatelaine was really worn hanging from a belt, and hung much lower down and had houshold keys and perhaps a pair of  small scissors, suspended from the chain.I wonder if it is a container for something like Sal Volatile, or smelling salts.Much  needed by over-corsetted ladies.
The clothing does appear lighter than black.

Hi dfk:

Could we see more of the photo? Whatever else is happening in the scene might provide an answer.

I'd be interested to see more of the photograph too, if possible, please.
