Soldier Search - Kilsyth War Memorial - James McGrandels
« on: Thursday 01 August 13 19:56 BST (UK) »
I am trying to identify a soldier remembered on Kilsyth War Memorial listed as James McGrandells

Statutory Births show a James McGrandels (correct spelling with Fathers signature on birth certificate)
Born 25/07/1884 in the district of Kilsyth and would have been aged 30 at the outbreak of war 1914.
Father was John McGrandels and mother Hannah McGrandels nee Tonner, resided Deacons Road, Kilsyth. I have tried statutory deaths to check if he died on return and had no success and have had no success with any of the military sites.
As always, any assistance from the more experienced welcome.

A James Mc Grandles (indexed as Mc Grandle) b 1885 left Glasgow for St John, New Brunswick, Canada on 19.11.1910

However - there is a James McGrandles b 1885 Bute living in Glasgow in 1901 so it could be him

Thanks Carole - I have checked out James McGrandles you have listed - he did enlist in Canada 27/05/15 with service number 441040, however he was born in Rothesay a year earlier. I also had a medal card for a James McGrindle and followed that with the service numbers but no link, looks like these guys survived  :D

Maybe the next one will get a result

Have you seen this:

http://www.saintpatrickskilsyth.org.uk/saintpatricks/histories_war_dead_ww1.htm

He was still alive in October 1915 when he was the informant of his father's death. He signed as James MCGRANDLES.

May I ask what is the objective of your research on war dead? Are you preparing a publication, or perhaps it's to do with the commemoration next year of the outbreak of the Great War?
