trying to find info on a fatal shipyard accident involving James Caldwell in Govan  in May 1949.
apparently hit by crane?

I have just looked up the on-line catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland and if you put James Caldwell and 1949 into the search boxes, it comes up with reference SC36/1949/35, Glasgow Sheriff Court records (off site, have to be ordered in in advance) - fatal accident inquiry - James Caldwell, ship's goods checker, 63 Barnes Road, Glasgow, died 12th May 1949.

Did he die on the day of the accident?

No i think the accident may have happened a few days before as on death extract multiple injuries 2 days, looks like hummenia 1 day and looks like snamothorax 2 days then cardiac failure.

date of death 12 May 1949, 10:30pm, 1301 Govan Rd, Usual address 63 Barnes Rd Glasgow

From my understanding you have 2 options to see the record.

1) request the record is brought to the main archives - the off-site reference means it isn't there at the moment (I can't remember if there is an option to do this on the web site or you need to phone them) and then arrange to go in to the archives and look at it. I don't think there should be a cost for this option

2) request a quote for the copying of the record and if you are willing to pay the amount they quote, pay them and they will photocopy the record and send it to you in the post. I think there is a minimum charge to get the quote but if you go ahead that is taken off the total.

I have managed the 2nd option without too much trouble using the information on the site so the current prices and details should be there.

Hi,

I've had a look in the Scotsman archive for 1949 and nothing is jumping out in a search for his name.  I've also tried the (Glasgow) Herald on Google, but can't see anything there either.  I looked from 9 - 14th May.  If you want to double check, you can see the newspapers here:
