Query re GRO Regimental Indices
« on: Sunday 28 July 13 00:45 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
can anyone help me with the procedure for obtaining a birth certificate from the GRO Regimental Indices. I have had several attempts at ordering the certificate through the GRO but my payment has been refunded with a "not found" notation but no explanation. Further queries have gone unanswered. The certificate I require is for:

Hayes Mary A
Regiment: 87th Foot
Place: Portsmouth
Country: England
Year: 1866
Volume: 1342
Page: 29

Record Source: GRO Regimental Birth Indices

Mary A Hayes also has a brother recorded on the Indices:

Hayes David H
Regiment: 87 Foot
Place: Rangoon
Country: India
Year: 1862
Volume: 1342
Page: 29

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Regards
Jena

Hi Jena

Have you read the information on the FindMyPast page? I assume you got the details from there. You could try the email enquiry address of certificate.services@ips.gsi.gov.uk

In my experience the indexing (especially the regiment) is often wrong so it is better to limit the information you give to the bare minimum – name, year, volume and page.

You should certainly not accept "Further queries have gone unanswered". If you have tried the email route, then you need to get tough and start asking "can I have one of those forms to tell you what I think of your service" or eventually  "it is still the Deputy Prime Minister's office who is responsible for your department.

The problem with civil servants is that they actually believe the rates they charge are reasonable. So it is always nice to remind them that Ireland provide BMDs for £3.50.

Ken

Added...you can also help the cause by telling the GRO that their link to overseas BMDs on https://www.gov.uk/research-family-history - is wrong

Hi Ken,
many thanks for your help. I have made another request through the link you provided. I haven't threatened them with the Prime Minister yet but I might next time!
Kind regards
