I also have (Miles) Robert as Robert at 36 Tulketh Street in 1871 as a grandson to I think Robert Sowerby (who's also on the 1861 census at no45)...no Eleanor though

I think you are correct

From the 1871 census  Robert’s occupation is Joiner
this looks to be Robert Sowerby on 1861 census although is age is a little out he's
living 45 Tulketh Street North Moels Southport

Robert SOWERBY
37 Preston occ Joiner (House)
Mary Ann  wife 45
James son 16
Elizabeth Trocroft niece 9
2 lodgers

Mary Ann’s surname could be ATKINSON

Sep 1851 Liverpool
Robert SOWERBY
Name on same page
Mary Ann ATKINSON

Lancashire BMD confirms
1851 St Peter Liverpool
Robert SOWERBY
Mary A ATKINSON

and family search has these marriage details
31 Aug 1851 St Peter https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NN9D-XJC
Mary Ann ATKINSON widowed father James WOODHOUSE
Robert SOWERBY single father John

So I'm assuming that Mary Ann ATKINSON nee Woodhouse is the mother of  your
Eleanor HODSON nee ATKINSON born 1840 Liverpool

Eleanor with her parents on 1841 c

possible marriage James to Mary Ann

James ATKINSON batchelor
May Ann WOODHOUSE spinster , both of this Parish
Married by Banns in the presence of James E Good & Nancy Lawrance ?
(source Anc*y)

3 Jan 1813 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
Mary Ann Woodhouse   Born: 26 Oct 1812
parents  James Woodhouse occ Upholsterer & Nancy
Abode: Lancaster
(Lancashire OPC)

I'm not sure about the Ellen death

I've got a copy of Mary Ann's baptism at Christchurch on the 27th November 1864...

Eleanor & Nathan Hodson's sons Miles (Robert) b1860 & Thomas b1863 have been found with their respective grandparents on 1871 census

if that's not Ellen Hodson 's death Dec qtr. 1864 Ormskirk then where are

Eleanor Hodson b1841 Liverpool and her dau Mary Ann b1864 hiding in 1871  ???
Proving pretty elusive - are they using a different surname?

Hmm...Robert Sowerby would be Mary Ann Atkinson's second husband then,Eleanor's father is given as James Atkinson(tailor) on the marriage certificate..Maybe that's where the Robert's from in Miles Robert...Miles is Nathan's fathers name...and also the confusion in Miles Robert being Miles,Miles Rbt and Robert on the censuses..

I’m just not seeing Nathan b1840 Southport , Eleanor b1840 Liverpool or their dau Mary Ann Hodson b1864 Southport on the 1871 census – have they been missed  ???

All that's coming up on Anc*y for Mary Ann HODSON is her 1864 baptism Christchurch Southport
parents Nathan & Eleanor  ???

Nathan Hodson is noted as a widower on  his 1879 marriage to Dorothy Dutton.

Nathan & Dorothy had another child born before William Frederick and born before their 1879 marriage - perhaps first wife Eleanor's death is sometime before 1876 after 1879  ???

N & D's son Nathan Hodson born 1876 Southport is with his grandmother Ann DUTTON in 1881

Just for info.

here’s Eleanor with he mother Mary on 1851 census Mary’s noted as Mar.

No luck I'm afraid with the 1871 census Nathan, Eleanor or Mary Ann Hodson  ???

I don’t know if this is worth following up there's a death entry for a Mary Ann HODSON - see what you think

I can’t say whether she maybe the daughter of Nathan & Eleanor
OR perhaps the sister of  Sarah Howard & Frederick HODSON (see Probate details below)
further investigation needed to confirm one way or the other

Mary A Hodson age 66 (1863) Date of Registration: Mar 1929
Registration District:   Ormskirk Volume:   8b page 1462

Mary Ann Hodson spinster of 46 Belmont Street Southport died 18 January 1929
Admin Liverpool 7 March to Sarah Howard widow and Frederick Hodson Gardener
Effects £129 2s. 9d.

Sarah Hodson/Howard same address 1901/11

1901 RG13; Piece: 3538; Folio: 13; Page: 18
46 Belmont Street Southport
Sarah Hodson 39 (1862) Eccleshall Staffordshire occ Cook ,she’s noted as a  visitor of the Howard household
William H HOWARD 38 Southport occ Joiner (Car.p) living with his mother & sister

Perhaps someone will be able to give you the marriage details so you can find out who Sarah's father is

marriage entry
1907 St. Paul's, Southport
HOWARD   William H
HODSON   Sarah

You probably have this already may just be a total coincidence but on the same page underneath Mary Ann’s name there's Miles Robert Hodson

Miles Robert Hodson of 66 Upper Aughton Rd Birkdale Southport died 10 August 1928 Admin London 24 Oct to Elizabeth Alice Hodson widow Effects £225.

I wish you good luck if you are still searching for the Hodson family on the 1871 census - if you do find them please post details  :)

Hi,

The age is right for the Mary Ann death...I don't have a Sarah Hodson in my tree however that's not to say this one isn't related.Mary Ann has a half brother,William Frederick, albeit at the time of this death is living in New York ,USA.

I have the probate for Miles Robert...Mary Ann's brother.

Still a blank on the 1871 census...I've been looking at emigration records in the hope that Nathan,Eleanor and Mary Ann were maybe out of the country, especially as Miles Robert and Thomas were living with their grandparents.

Cheers
