Robert Whyte / White Balrothery 1894 - is this the right man?
« on: Saturday 20 July 13 22:09 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am currently working on some Irish ancestors and have tracked down a Robert Whyte which is the right man in the 1911 census for Dublin. He is a boarder with the Wilmot family and it is confirmed as him as he goes onto marry the daughter.

He is listed as Robert Whyte, 26, bn. Balrothery Co Dublin

He is boarding in Mountjoy, Dublin.

A search of the church records for Dublin comes back with

Area - DUBLIN (COI) , Parish/Church/Congregation - ST. GEORGE
Baptism of ROBERT BOYD WHITE of 23 FITZGIBBON STREET on 16 April 1884

Name    ROBERT BOYD WHITE
Date of Birth   6 February 1884
Address   23 FITZGIBBON STREET
Father   ROBERT WHITE
Mother   AUGUSTA WHITE

The date fits in roughly enough but the spelling of the surname has changed (not a great surprise as Wilmot / Willmott seem interchangeable as well)
As far as I can see the parish of St George covers Balrothery so it seems like this could be him.

Just looking for confirmation that it all fits in as the correct man and any other advice on sources to check. I will be looking into the listed occupation in the future which is listed as Postal Branch G P O R G A Reservist.

Cheers
Neil

Edited a bit as - completely misread the first part of your post

Balrothery is out in North County Dublin, while St George's is North Dublin City, so no, it doesn't seem to be correct.
A lot of Balrothery records are on the PPV site Rootsireland.ie - so worth a look if you haven't.

On his Occupation of 'Postal Branch G P O R G A Reservist' I would take this to mean
1. That his is working at the General Post Office (GPO) on O'Connell Street (one of the main scenes of the Easter Rising a few years later)
2. I would imagine (but not positive) that this refers to the Royal Garrison Artillery Reservists.
hope that helps

Best match I can see for Robert's birth in Civil index.

There is another birth in 1884, registered in ‘Balrothery’, which may also be a possibility.
Birth
Name:  Robert White
Registration Quarter and Year:    Jul - Sep 1884
Registration District: Balrothery
Volume Number:  2
Page Number: 369

But, if you do not have it already, I’d start with ordering the €4 copy of their marriage register from the General Register Office, to confirm the church where they married, as well as the fathers’ names and occupations. Details are:
Marriage
Name: Robert Whyte
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1911
Registration District: Dublin North
Volume: 2
Page Number: 461
It cross-matches with Louise Jeannette Wilmot, so seems likely.

Thank you so much guys.  You've saved me from going down a wrong path!
When I was looking at St Georges parish the was a Mountjoy square which threw me a bit. I'll get the marriage certificate and go from there.

Cheers!

Out of interest, where did you search the index to get the 1864 hits for Balrothery? I've tried FamilySearch and RootsIreland but could only get the marriage certificate.
