Gainford family
« on: Saturday 20 July 13 19:03 BST (UK) »
Hello- I'm looking for any information about my Great grandmother x4 her name was Jane Gainford and she was born at  Darlington in 1795. Her father was called John.

I know that she married William Rutherford and they had a son, John Gainford Rutherford.

I'm searching for any siblings of hers.

Regards Pete.

Hi Pete,

I wonder if this could be a contender for Jane's brother :

Christening: 3rd November 1793
Thomas Gainford
Father : John Gainford
St. Cuthberts, Darlington, Durham

Kind regards,

Pels.

Hi Pels-Thanks for that, there doesn't seem to be a lot of Gainfords about.

Cheers Pete.

Family Search has the Bishop's Transcripts for St Cuthbert's during the time scale you need :

But it means ploughing your way through them.  :-\

Just had a scan through Gainfords/Gainforths on Durham Records Online and got the following births:-
1783 John (buried 1791)
1784 William
1793 Thomas (buried 1795)
1791 Ann
1795 Jane.
There had been earlier births of an Ann and a Jane, but they died. William (recorded as being of King Street) was buried at Darlington cemetery in 1869.
A John Gainford - Jane's father? -  was recorded as buried in 1819.
Couldn't find out more without using up some of my credits, but you could look these up in the Bts.
Northumberland: Little, Hogg, Tyers, Reid
Durham: Todd, Lee,
Cumbria: Ross, Ivison, Tyers
Yorkshire North Riding: Pybus, Alderson, Rutherford, Mudd, Wilson
Sussex: Selmes, Ashdown, Freelove, Mitchell

I'm so sorry to reply to such an old post but I was wondering if perhaps our Gainford's are connected. I'm afraid I don't have any datets yet but, according to a rough family tree drawn up by my husbands grandfather, we have the following:

My husband m. me (Erica Little)
His father m. his mother
John Gainford m. Rena Finlay
Sidney Gainford m. Eleanor Sandelands
Joseph Gainford m. Frances Liddle (Frances' brother, Alix Oliffe Liddle, was killed in WW1 when the Germans shelled Hartlepool. I think the family were from Darlington)
John Gainford m. Sarah Bell (two ladies both named Sarah Bell!)
Joseph Gainford m. Hannah Cooke
Henry Gainford m. Martha Guest
Little - Dumfries (Clan Little) and Bristol
Moule
Perks
Taylor
Helsdon - Norfolk
Grix - Norfolk
Jenkins
Gainford - husbands family (which also contains Littles from Cumbria!)
