BROWN burial in Benfieldside/Blackhill Municipal Cemetery
« on: Friday 19 July 13 09:22 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

John BROWN, b.c. 1856 Hexham, Northumberland was living at 6 Dale Street, Blackhill in the 1911 census; at 15 Furnace Row, Benfieldside in 1901 census and at 4 Furnace Row, Benfieldside in 1891 census.

In 1911, he shows as having had 6 children, 3 who had survived.  On a recent visit to Durham Record Office, I found burials at Benfieldside/Blackhill municipal cemetery for 2 of the children who had died:

20/11/1889 Phoebe Ann, dau. of John Brown, 2 months, 4 Furnace Row
24/5/1894 Eliza, dau. of John Brown, 2 months, 4 Furnace Row

Can anyone possibly help with the burial of the third child of John Brown?  Somehow, I've missed it, and can't get back to Durham Record Office for a little while.

Many thanks for any assistance.

Kind regards, Shirelass

I've attached a PDF of the Brown burials in Blackhill cemetery; there are quite a few and you can decide which ones are relevant, but I think pages 6, 8, 9, 10, 21 and 27 are worth a close perusal. With regard to the two bottom records on page 6, is it possible that John's first wife died and he married again shortly afterwards?

             Good luck with your researches.

                    PatB.

Dear PatB,

I'm utterly stunned with the wealth of detail you've sent me!  Thank you so very much for taking the time and trouble to reply so helpfully, and so quickly too!  Many of the entries will help me so much.  I'm fascinated by the fact that John Brown may have married twice.  I was very much hoping that one of his children would be named Catherine, and here is the burial of his child Katherine, as I think his mother was Catherine too!  I'll chase up the marriage certificate to confirm that it is a first marriage for him.

Again, I can't say thank you enough for all this wonderful help.

With my best wishes, Shirelass

Hi Shirelass

I am researching John Brown too as he was my great great Grandad. I have been unable to find details of his mother, so I was interested in your comment that you believe she was called Catherine? I also have nothing to suggest he was married before (other than the information on this thread), so I wondered if you have managed to confirm or dismiss that theory? I will PM you my email address so we can share info if you would like to.

PatB, the information provided in the Brown PDF of burials is amazing! I have found not only John & Elizabeth Brown's missing children, but also details of my Nan's brother being stillborn in 1928 (parents were William & Janet Brown). It has also helped me to confirm that the family were in Blackhill still a little later than I thought, so thank you so much! I notice from other posts on here that you used to have a website for Blackhill cemetery. Is there any plans to bring it back? I have some Allen ancestors too who I believe may also be buried in Blackhill cemetery and possibly Grahams too so if you have a PDF of those that would be amazing.

Thanks again. I love what you can find on forums. I  only searched Blackhill and the first thread I find is about my family!  :)

Thanks for your comments. I'm going through a photography and transcription phase at the moment, with headstones, so I'm not in any rush to get gravetext back online - I don't have any boss but myself, so I work to my own timetable.

I've attached a PDF of the Allen, Allan and Allon Burial records from Benfieldside, which you may find helpful. There are well over 100 Graham records in Benfieldside; could you be more specific?
