WAKEFIELD - John - Birth
« on: Thursday 18 July 13 05:27 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Really trying to find a John Wakefield born 1796 somewhere in Oxfordshire. He married Sarah Thackwell in Long Compton, Warwickshire in 1816 and later moved to Cherington Warwickshire, from there to Canada where he dies. I am thinking he might have been born somewhere along the border of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire close to Long Compton....sadly that is only a guess as I have reached a dead end on his family history. Anything at all would be so very helpful. Thank you all so much.

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn
I have looked on 4 x Oxfordshire Family History Society CD's I have which cover 44 parishes along the Western edge of Oxfordshire and no luck. That's a few too many for me to type the names of the towns and villages as I have to go out.

If you look up the content of the following CD's on the Oxfordshire Family History Society  it will show you which parishes I have searched;
OXF - CN 01, OXF - CN02, OXF - CN03, OXF - Ban 03

Perhaps within your research you have another piece of info about where he may have come from. After his marriage did they have a child baptised in one of the parents home village. Often the 1st born would take place at the mothers family home. Perhaps there is the name of a sibling who can be searched who remained within the home village or returned there.

I am not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but often I have had to search siblings or other relatives backwards in order to then go 'across' and fit a jigsaw piece in?

Sorry this isn't much help

They had a son Daniel David Wakefield, born 8 March 1819, Cherington, Warwickshire. He died 28 January 1902, Ontario, Canada.
Hope this helps  ;D

Hi Carolyn ...

How sure are you that he was born in Oxfordshire?

Family Search has a John WAKEFIELD baptised in 1795 in Wolford, Warwickshire (very close to both Long Compton and Cherington).

Oh thank you Pennie and all of you helping!!!

That is the quandry!!! I have the death certificate from Ontario, Canada stating he was born in Warwickshire. But also have the 1841 England Census in Cherington stating he was born out of province, (ancestry.ca) and the 1851 Census of Ontario stating he was born in Oxfordshire.....ahhhhh...I have found no trace of him in Oxfordshire, and have the inclination to go with Warwickshire now as his birthplace, as it was his son who gave the info for the death registration......these families I have in Warwickshire seemed to have stayed within a couple of miles for a few generations usually...anyway.

Thank you all so much. I really appreciate it. I will pursue I think the Wolford (and another in Hampton Lucy), and see where it gets me!!! If you have any more ideas don't hesitate to post.

OK ... as you do seem to have some (inconclusive) information that he was born in Oxfordshire, it may be worth you contacting the Oxfordshire Family History Society (www.ofhs.org.uk) and asking for a search of their surname baptism index which covers most of the county.

There is a small charge, but you can pay online.
