Another uniform to identify - Irish
« on: Wednesday 17 July 13 08:09 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me anything about this uniform please?  He was John Joseph Kelly, lived & died as far as I know, in Rathangan, Kildare, Ireland. His wifes maiden name is given as Coughlan on one of their daughters birth registry but I'm unable to find the other children  Thomas, Anastacia, David, Kitty and Stephen.  Though maybe if I could find out more about Joseph it might lead me to his wifes name etc?

The cap and shape of the cuffs indicate c1904 to WW1. He has a good conduct 'badge' above his left cuff for two years good conduct. A second was issued after a further five years. So at least 2 to 7 years service as a Regular soldier.

Depending upon his date of birth then his service record may be in the group for WW1 which were two-thirds destroyed during the 1940 blitz. Men enlisted for 12 years after the age of 18. So if his 30th birthday was after 1st January 1914 then he would be classed as 'WW1'. The last five years could have been in the Army Reserve so he may be in the 1911 census as a civilian, but still in the army.

The dark cuffs are probably blue indicating 'Royal Regiment'. I dont recognise the cap badge as being one of the Irish ones. A better scan of just the cap badge would help. It could be topped by Prince of Wales feathers. It is not one of the fusilier regiments.

Can you give more information about his age, his wife, date of marriage and when the children were born (if known).

One daughter Anne Kelly was born in 1928 and we think was one of the youger chidren so I'm guessing that John Joseph Kelly may have been born around 1900, I will investigate further. Thanks both for the uniform input!   ;D

They stopped using the red tunic for line regiments in 1914. It may be his father.

Good evening,

Several regt's use or have used the Prince of Wales feathers. The only one I know with the scroll turned up the sides like that is the Welch Regt. The two parts of the scroll have the words "ICH DIEN" on them.

The Welsh Regiment were not 'royal' and so had white collars and cuffs.

He is definitely a soldier of the Prince of Wales's Leinster (Royal Canadians) Regiment, as evinced by his cap and collar badges (different to the Welsh Regt) and his dark blue facings (collar and cuffs) of a Royal Regiment (which the Welsh were not).  He has a single good conduct badge (inverted stripe) on his left cuff for 2-years of blemish free service.  The full dress scarlet uniform that he is wearing was withdrawn on the outbreak of war in 1914.
