Row House, Marsden
« on: Saturday 13 July 13 17:40 BST (UK) »
My grandfather, William Thomas Blackstone, was born at Row House, Marsden on 30 Dec 1894. Does anyone know where that was, or what sort of place it was? The name sounds a bit posh for our sort of family, unless his father was working there, perhaps in the stables.

Perhaps someone at the Marsden History Group could help www.marsdenhistory.co.uk/
They have a forum.

I suspect its the same cottage they are living in in 1901 census by a different name, or similar, its in the same general area.

In 1891 census :

Row House, Marsden,
William H Bowden, Woollen Teaser, and Family.
RG12/3554/22/7

Houses either side include Upper Bank Bottom (two houses away) and Hoyle Top.

Houses either side of the Blackstone Family in 1901 census in Marsden include Lower Bank Bottom and Hoyle Top (pulled down).

The post from Treetotal is the wrong area.
We are talking about the Pennine village called Marsden?
This is just outside Huddersfield West Yorkshire -

Yes, it's the Marsden near Huddersfield; they moved there a few years later. I did ask on the Marsden History Group forum, but hadn't had an answer yet, but thank you all, especially Wolfie Smith, that looks like a very likely answer.

Hi

Had a look at the 1901 census and it says Hoyle Top had been pull down so I would guess that Row House might of suffered the same fate. Had a look for other names and I think it would have been on the Almondbury side of Marsden possibly where the Marsden County junior school is.
That might explain its fate.
