hello. on a birth certificate if the childs father had died before the baby was born would it say deceased in the fathers column as it does on a wedding certificate. thanks nick

There is no requirement that he should be marked deceased.

My grandfather's birth was registered by his grandfather and on the cert. it stated his father was deceased  gave the date of death and that he had been killed in an accident .

This is the information you will find on a UK birth cert, which normally gives occupation of father the ones I have where the father died prior says deceased in the occupation box, and/or gives occupation and deceased in brackets


When and where they were born (Full Date of Birth [DOB] Day, Month and Year)
Full name of the person
Male or Female
Given Name/s and Surname of Father
Given Name/s and Surname of Mother and her maiden Name
Occupation of Father
Signature, description and residence area of who registered the birth (normally one or both parents)or a mark X if they couldn't read/write
The date the birth was registered
Registrar's signature
If a name was entered after the child was registered

As set up the Civil Registration System is Informant Driven that is the minister or registrar accept what they are told. People could be, and a small number were, prosecuted for offences under the Registration Acts, e.g. if any of the details were willfully incorrect, but they would have to be found out. So what is on the certificate can be whatever the informant decided to say. The question of showing the name of the father on a birth certificate is a different matter and has been addressed many times on RootsChat.
