japenese pow
« on: Wednesday 10 July 13 21:53 BST (UK) »
Hi, looking for any info on japense pow. My granddad was in the medical corps during the war and was captured by the japs and forced, along with many others, to walk across Europe (so i'm told). I do have some info as when he died it was in the local paper. He never ever spoke about this time and when I questioned him about he, he put his cap on and went to the pub!!!

Hi

I do not think that the Japanese had a presence in Europe.

You could try the link below

hi sandi15
it appears whoever told you about Japanese pow,s being marched across Europe is getting mixed up with allied  pow,s being marched across Europe by there german captors with the Russians advancing pows in what became known as the death march in the middle of winter were forced to head west away from the Russians .do a google search for british pows force march you,ll find more info on several sites .
if you go to this site , veterans-uk.info/  from there you can download the necessary forms to apply for your granddads  service record if he,s no longer with us then a death cert is needed and a fee of £30 if his wife is still alive she can get the record for nothing it does take a long time to process but all being well will give you more info on him .
also do a google search for british pows of the Japanese , numerous sites show up and I,m sure looking through them you will come to understand the reason why he refused to talk about it all and the inhuman suffering they endured .

Hi Sandi15,

Try entering his name into this search engine, if he was a Japanese POW, there is a good chance he will be on it.

Good luck.

Hi. Have found an old newspaper which has a story about my grandfather which was printed the day after his death in 1984. It seems he was with the 152 Highland Field Ambulance service and was captured at St. Valery, France and ended up in a POW camp in Poland! He spent 5 years in the camp before coming home to Dundee,Scotland.  My apologies for thinking it was the japenese who captured him. :-\ As no-one is left (except his younger son),I would be very grateful for any info.

Hi, Yes I can. His name was David Butchart and he signed up here in Dundee. I don't have his service number.  His youngest son has no interest in this and isn't very well, and his last remaining son has dementia. Seems like i'm the only one interested.

right pow details / camp no 8b pow no 36153  army service no 7342369  camp location teschen .
now you have his service no it helps if you want to apply for his service record the only reason I asked if your uncle would apply is that as next of kin he would get the complete record but if you apply certain info would be taken out mostly personal info I believe like his medical record , but it would still be worth having I,m sure .
do a google search for teschen pow camp ww2 one or two interesting sites come up
regards
