Missing C of E Church?
« on: Monday 08 July 13 05:24 BST (UK) »
I am currently transcribing later baptisms (1950-1960) from  the former St Michael's Church in Farnley, Leeds. In many cases, in the margin there is a note to say the baptism took place elsewhere, which is usually just "St James", referring to the chapel in New Farnley. But there are also a lot of notes indicating that the baptisms took place at "St Pauls", which is a chapel I have never heard of. The addresses of those families are all in the Farnley area. Has anyone any idea where this chapel may have been?

WYAS have a church listed under Farnley - St Paul, New Blackpool - baptisms 1963-1964.  The other two churches listed are St James 1857-1964 (baptisms only) and St Michael 1791-1974 (baptisms), 1839-1991 (marriages), 1794-1969 (burials) and 1938-1987 (banns).  Originals all held at Leeds office.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

The National Index of Parish Registers gives the address for St Paul's as Branch Road, New Blackpool, Lower Wortley. That doesn't mean a lot to me, but I hope it might to you!

Given the information supplied by all, I believe I know where this is.
Pardon if my directions don't make any sense to non Leeds 'Loiners'. :o
On the Wortley Ring Road we have a well known Ford dealership garage known as 'Ringways'.
This garage is/was positioned at the intersection of the A58 (Halifax road) and the 'ring road' (A6110), taking the A58 Halifax road the area known as 'New Blackpool' is immediately to the right 100/200metres from this intersection.- Street names are beginning with Blackpool.

Excellent! I know the actual building. That solves that then. I had noticed that many of the families that used it came from the new estates that had being built between New Blackpool and Farnley proper to the West. St Michaels must have kept the records until 1963. Thank you for your help.
