Stevenson,Donegore and Parkgate, Antrim
« on: Friday 05 July 13 03:55 BST (UK) »
My gr- gr grandfather is Hans Stevenson married to Mary Boswell. All his children are baptised at Pres Church, Parkgate. My gr grandfather is Samuel Stevenson married Eliza Agnew 1860, emigrated to Australia 1864.
How do I go back past Hans S  (1). ?  I have no idea where he might be buried or who are the members of his family. I know 2 of his sons went to Canada.

Any assistance welcome

James

A previous thread on this, you might like to try the first and last posters (though the latter hasn't been active since 2010):

There's a will for a Hans Stevenson of Racavan (townland and civil parish in County Antrim - not a million miles away from Parkgate, say 10-15 miles north) which mentions children John, Ellen, Margaret, Sophia, and Jane, it might be worth looking at:

The Will of Hans Stevenson late of Rocavan County Antrim Farmer who died 18 March 1884 at same place was proved at Belfast by John Stevenson of Rocavan Farmer one of the Executors.

http://applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/WillsSearch.aspx

Also, there is a family tree for a Hans Stevenson / Mary Boswell (with references to Parkgate births / baptisms) on the Ancestry website, you might want to look at that - the usual caveat about the possible inaccuracy of such information and the need to do your own work in verifying records etc. applies.

By the way, not sure why this is in County Down, perhaps one of the Moderators will move it for you.  :)

There is a contemporary Hans Stevenson in County Down but I'm assuming this isn't the one you're interested in.

Edited to add: The Griffiths Valuation entry for the Hans Stevenson from the PRONI wills who died in 1884 seems to be a Hans Stenson farming 33 acres in Racavan. Also a familysearch record for the marriage of a Jane Stevenson of Racavan (father Hans):

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGCP-C6K

There is nothing to tie the PRONI will, Griffiths Valuation entry or familysearch record for Jane back to your Hans Stevenson yet, but worth noting until you can rule in or out.

Yes Tangles......that Hans will seems to fit .....but not quite.....

Hans parents were James and Margaret who had a large family but only four children surviving to adulthood.

Regards

Steve

Gaffy

thanku for your replies
The Will and the 'Stenson' in the Griffiths Valuations seem to go together.
I still haven't got my head around the short distances, Australia is the opposite.
Visited Ireland last year and was amazed.
