Baker and Johnson - St. George Hanover Square
« on: Sunday 30 June 13 17:03 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out what became of Jane Ethel Johnson (b. Hackney 1890). In 1911, she was working as housekeeper at 18 Kensington Place, Westminster St Margaret and St John.

I believe that she married Frederick George Baker (1886 - 1924) in St. George Hanover Square in 1912 (my guess is they married at St. Mary the Virgin, Vincent Square, Tothill Fields).

In 1921, Frederick was shown on the electoral register as living with Jane's sister (Elizabeth Finall) at 111 Tachbrook Street, Pimlico.

In 1923, Frederick is still living at 111 Tachbrook Street, Pimlico, with two of Jane's elder sisters (Elizabeth Finall and war-widow Beatrice Smith) and Frederick's father (Frederick Baker Sr.*)

If Jane was alive, is there any reason that she would not appear on the electoral register?

Jane and Frederick possibly had a daughter - Jennie E E Baker - in 1914. It appears that Frederick died in 1924 but I cannot find any further records on Jane or Jennie. Please can someone suggest my next course of action?

Thanks for reading.

*I assume that Frederick Baker Sr. was a widower because he married his neighbour Emily Jane Dunston in 1924.

Sadly a short marriage then- if he also died in 1924.

Lots of assumptions in this - I would go one step at a time and back up with some certs as you. All to easy to follow the wrong people!

If it is the marriage to Emily Dunston that is the starting point, then prob best to get that cert for more details on the Frederick before going backwards from there.

It was Frederick Baker junior who died in 1924. It was his father, Frederick Baker senior, who married Emily Jane Dunston.

If Jane Ethel Johson married Frederick Baker junior then she became a widow in 1924.

Sorry - just reread your first post and I still only see one Frederick George Baker mentioned ,  1886 -1924, who married Jane Ethel Johnon in 1912, possibly has a daughter Jennie in 1914, is with wife's sisters etc on electoral rolls, married Emily Dunston in 1924 as a widower, and then as already said in his dates, dies 1924.

If there are 2 Frederick Georges, I think more info is needed as to which info relates to which!

Thanks for your reply and I apologise if my post was confusing

For clarity:

A = Frederick George Baker senior (born abt 1861)
Married Elizabeth Annie Swinburne in 1880
Married Emily Jane Dunston in 1924

B = Frederick George Baker junior (born 1886)

C = Jane Ethel Johnson (born 1890)

B is the son of A.
B married C in 1912.
B died in 1924.

I am only interested in the life of C after 1912. I appreciate your point about the marriage certificate but I'm not sure how this will help me work out what happened to C after the marriage.

I got lucky. I found the following people living at 43 Heyford Avenue, Lambeth SW8 in the 1935 London Electoral Registers:
Jennie Elizabeth Ellen Baker
Jane E Cooper
Walter Cooper

I found out that Jane Ethel Baker married Walter in 1925 (a year after her first husband Frederick died). They had a son called Peter in 1928. Jane and Walter lived in Lambeth until 1963 when Jane died (Walter died in 1956).

Jane's daughter Jennie was on the electoral register with them from 1935 until 1939. She is not on the register with them in 1945. Maybe she married a GI!
