Hi Dee,

I contacted the Bay of Plenty News a couple of days ago but i'm still waiting for a reply.

I'm sure they won't want to give up on a good story, here's hoping!

Just found a reference to an Owen Louden where Errol has been involved on here:
http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?3556-F-O-Stan-Cleworth-RAF-Silloth-RCAF
From my Vol Three:

LOUDEN, Flight Sergeant Owen Ernest Dudley.
NZ427044; b Hamilton 19 Jan 24; Hamilton THS; draughtsman's assistant - Waikato EPB, Hamilton. ATC; RNZAF Taieri as Aircrafthand (ATC) 11 Jul 42, remust as Airman Pilot u/t 27 Jul 42, 1EFTS c.27 Jul 42, 2SFTS 17 Oct 42, Pilots Badge [wef 29.12.42] & Sgt 6 Mar 43, att RAF & emb for UK 4 Apr 43, 12PD&RC 29 May 43, 17(P)AFU 6 Jul 43, 55OTU (Hurricane) 16 Nov 43, kaa 27 Dec 43. Silloth (Causewayhead) Cemetery - R.16, Holme Low, Cumb., England. Son of John Frederick & Elsie Louden (née Booth), Hamilton. [phot. TWN 26.5.43, & 9.2.44 & 6.9.44].

EPB = Electric Power Board
TWN - refers to a New Zealand paper called 'The Weekly News'. The three issues with photos are:

26 May 43 page 12 (head and shoulders view, one of two airmen pictured)
9 Feb 44 page 22 (smaller view, passport size, head and shoulders view)
6 Sep 44 page 26 (photo of a memorial trophy in his memory presented by his parents to the Hamilton Yacht Club)

Copies can be obtained from the RNZAF Museum, who hold an almost complete set of TWN for WWII - info@airforcemuseum.co.nz

Might be worth putting something in the Hamilton, NZ local paper too as his records say:
Son of John Frederick & Elsie Louden (née Booth), Hamilton.

Errol martyn must be putting a late night but has replied already. This is from the New Zealand loss bible For Your Tomorrow Series which he wrote:
From Vol 2 (Fates: 1943-1998):

Mon 27 Dec 1943

ALLIED EXPEDITIONARY AIR FORCE

Sector reconnaissance and dog fight practice

55 Operational Training Unit, RAF (Annan, Dumfriesshire - 9 Group, Air Defence of Great Britain)

Hurricane X AG175 - took off at about 0930, completed one dogfight and began another with one of the Unit’s Hurricane Is (V7010). During the engagement the fighters collided in mid-air, at 1045, and are believed to have crashed 10 miles SW of Carlisle, Cumberland. The pilots, both age 19, are buried at Silloth. (Note: The crash site is described in official records as ‘at Dalston, 10 miles SW of Carlisle’, but Dalston lies only 4 miles away, not 10. ‘Near’ Dalston, as the closest town of significant size to the crash site, may have been intended rather than ‘at’.)

Pilot:                NZ427044 Flt Sgt Owen Ernest Dudley LOUDEN, RNZAF - Age 19. 378hrs.

Thu 27 Jul 1944

ALLIED EXPEDITIONARY AIR FORCE

Rocket projectile attack on an enemy concentration near Tilly-la-Campagne, France

609 Squadron, RAF (B7 [Martragny], France - 123 Wing, 84 Group, 2nd Tactical Air Force)

Typhoon IB JP843 - took off at 1730 as ‘No 2’ with three others to attack troops and transport 7km SSE of Caen, being one of two which failed to return. After encountering flak the Typhoon was seen by the others to break to the right and down, disappearing into a rainstorm. JP843 was later found crashed near Poussy-la-Campagne, 7km SE of Tilly-la-Campagne. The pilot was buried at the scene, but later reinterred at Ranville, 9km NE of Caen.

Pilot:                NZ424518 Plt Off Peter March PRICE, RNZAF - Age 20. 472hrs. 10th op.

You might be able to make contact with relatives through the 'Lost Trails' columns of the quarterly magazine of the Returned Services Association - RSA Review. There is no charge for placing a notice in the column. Write to the editor at dion@waterfordpress.co.nz

He also suggested as I did that you get the record from the NZDF for even more info :)

Thanks Dee for posting all that information.

The link that mentions the pilot that Owen collided with over Cumbria is very interesting.

I may contact them as they seemed interested in knowing about Owen.

Cheers,

Hello again.

If you leave the Hamilton connection to me, I will try to locate living relatives. I have just tried a Hamilton listing without success, but did business with LOUDENS many moons ago on the Gordonton Road, and have contacts with the BOOTH'S of Hamilton.

Will see what I can did up over the next couple of days.

Thanks Alan, you are so kind,

John Frederick Lauden (Owen's father) originally came from Hamilton but then moved to Tauranga in about 1955/6. I don't know if he had any other family in Hamilton, I think that may be my next line of research as trying to find Owen's sisters family (Wilson) that lived in Tauranga is proving very difficult. Elsie Lauden (nee Booth) I believe came from Lancashire, England but of course she probably came to NZ with her family of who there may be descendants still living in Hamilton.

I really appreciate your kind offer in trying to help with this,

Many thanks,

Jacqui
