This is the death that had me confused

Agh ....

There is just ONE reference number so it is ONE certificate, so it is one death that was being registered.  There are two entries on the index as the dc has TWO surnames cited in respect of the deceased's surname.   The official transcription of the death cert will provide you with quite a depth of family history information about the deceased.

Majm, that's what i thought but don't like to assume as i'm still new and make mistakes, i will order the death and hopefully this will shead some more light on the situation.

Thank you Sparrett, i'm quiet intrigued with miss Caroline as the family story is she is related to Lord Baydon Powell ( but we all know how reliable family story's are LoL )

Change of name - deed poll

The index for the Change of Name register was initially kept in separately bound books from 1875 to 1967. From 1967 to 1996 the deeds were recorded in the Vendors index. Records from 1992 to 1996 must be searched through Deeds Name Search. From 1.4.1996 to date all change of name records have been kept by and must be searched through the NSW Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages. For more information see 'General Register of Deeds'.

A change of name can no longer be registered in the General Register of Deeds. A change of name should be referred to:

The last time I did a name change search, the early books were at the Lands Title office in Sydney. They may have been moved.   I have spent many hours with those books.

The informal name changes are of course not formally registered .... that's why they were informal changes brought about by usage.    So there's no register for informal changes. 

The Lands Office registers were for formal changes ie deed poll changes which took effect immediately upon registration.    It was usual for these to be advertised in a newspaper at the time, showing former and new names.       

I have long understood that most name changes in NSW were of the informal variety throughout the 19th and most of the 20th Century, until say around  late 1980s and into the 1990s and the introduction of the need to present official documentation (100 points etc) to become eligible to  open bank accounts etc.
