Surname change 1880 - 1920 NSW
« on: Saturday 29 June 13 00:13 BST (UK) »
Is there some where i would be able to find record of a surname change in NSW ?

I'm researching the name Tubnor, and the latest marriage transcript has just arrived with parents names, i entered this information into NSW BDM and could not find his birth under the name Tubnor however there is a birth that fits in the name of Tubbenhauer. So i searched online trees and found 2 that have the same family with the same name change but neither of them have a source .

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From the NSW BDM online site that EDO linked :

"A person is legally able to change his or her name. If a person alters their name or uses an additional or other name with the intention to act fraudulently or with an intention to deceive or in any other way which contravenes the law, they may be subject to criminal proceedings.

A person may use a new name without any formal steps. At common law, a person will not actually change his or her name until the person has used and become known by the new name. Under the Registry's legislation the name is changed once it is registered"

In NSW it is still not illegal to change your name from the name your parents used when they registered your birth.     There is no formal register of those who have used that informal method (common usage) to become known by another name.

JM has highlighted the pertinent info :)    Possibly this family were one of the many, many families who changed their surnames during WW1.  Possibly it was the anti German feeling in Aus during WW1 that caused many to 'Anglicise' their name.  Even if this family weren't of German descent their name may have sounded German to many.  I doubt you will find any formal record of the change.  I know of many families of German descent who 'Anglicised' their surname and some as late as WW2.  I know of one person who changed his surname from WEIDENBACH to ARNOLD during WW1 however his siblings did not.  Made for interesting research at the time. :)

To 1918 in NSW these were the couples of the TUBBENHAUER surname having children

Charles and Elizabeth
Arthur L. and Caroline
Amie and "Blank"
Ernest and Isabella

In 1914 Ernest Charles TUBBENHAUER joined the AIF aged 21. He married in England by  special license to Dorothy Porter in 1918.
There is a letter from him in the file from an address in South Australia which looks to me to be dated in 1967.

It complains of incorrect spelling of TUBBENHAUER on an engraved medal. (  V where a U should be)

http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScreens/AdvSearchAll.aspx

So it would seem that not all branches of the family surname changed the spelling and thus the sound of it.
