James McArthur-again!
« on: Thursday 27 June 13 15:51 BST (UK) »
Hello, folks.....
After the last attempt at finding info on James, and/or his parents, and finding nothing, I consulted a "researcher", whose claim that "no find-no fee" applied, so I went ahead.......received a message saying that James' parents were DONALD McArthur (not DUNCAN), "a young man in Avinvogie, & Mary Currie, "a young woman in Roskern", and I could send the fee to get the copy of certificate. Overjoyed at this news, I did.  When I wrote this researcher back, asking about HOW he connected James to this couple, in particular, as there seem to have been quite a few McArthur-Currie mergers on Islay, and this certificate really tells me nothing. I have sent 2 messages to this person, asking for some kind of verification, but no answer, so guess I fell for it.
The date of marriage on this copy is 11 September, 1799-Bowmore or Kilarrow Parish Register.
Perhaps someone more experienced than I could look, and see if this couple had children, and if they actually had one named James!  If not, looks like I'm back to square one........
Thanking you in anticipation.

Hi Aeife

Sorry to hear it is all still a struggle...also a bit of a pain from what you say... :-\

From your previous post here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,516274.0.html we already had some mention of a Donald McArthur and Mary Currie there. Below is Sharon's info:

Hi,

A Donald Mcarthur married a Mary Currie on 11/09/1799, Killarrow, Argyll

Possible children of Mary Currie & Donald Mcarthur were:

Janet Mcarthur baptised 09/07/1800. Killarrow, Argyll
Archibald Macarthur baptised 20/05/1802,
Mary Mcarthur baptised 30/05/1805, Killarrow, Argyll
Nancy Mcarthur baptised 01/07/1807, Killarrow, Argyll
Malcom Mcarthur baptised 07/02/1809, Killarrow, Argyll
Katherine Mcarthur baptised 20/07/1809, Killarrow, Argyll (Currie spelt Curry)
Marrion Mcarthur baptised 01/08/1814, Killarrow, Argyll

No James though.

Sharon

Thank you for your reply, Monica.....
I thought this couple looked familiar, and as Sharon's message said, no James, so just might have to accept the facts, that no information CAN be found, and have been trying, again with no luck, to find out something about James & Annabella's 2 sons, John & Archibald, to hopefully find descendants that know more. John was born 10 March 1835, Islay, and Archibald was born 1843, Glasgow, and have so far, found nothing on them as to marriages, deaths, etc..  ???  The mystery continues.......

Aeife, I don't think you have mentioned in any post...what was Duncan McArthur's occupation on his son James' death cert? Might not help if it is likely one of those really helpful ones: crofter, labourer etc  ::)

Iain's census info for the family from 1841-61 will be helpful, from the other post, for people trying to help.

Monica  :)

Sorry, Aeife...saw this yesterday, meant to post and realise now I didn't when I saw it now.

Possible info for Archibald from a/try trees. He is showing as having left for the US in the 1860s. This entry is included for him in 1900 in Jersey City Ward 8, Hudson, New Jersey:

Archibold Mcarthur 48, b. Oct 1851 in Scotland (1920 census shows him aged c. 1843)
Sarah Mcarthur 35 b. Scotland
Annabel Mcarthur 16 b. New Jersey
Archibold Mcarthur 14 b. New Jersey
Minnie Mcarthur 12 b. New Jersey
Cornelia Mcarthur 3 b. New Jersey
Agnes Limbach 13 (confusing entry this one)

More work needs to be done on this possible lead for Archibald. From some of the documents enclosed, he may have gone on to join the navy (RN or Merchant Service?). Wife Sarah showing as McKenzie born in Glasgow.

Some entries for children here I think:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FD5B-ML1
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FZS2-2RL

Oh my  :o Just found this entry for a marriage in California in 1926 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-29945-3143-31?cc=1804002&wc=M9MJ-QYM:1991617097  A second marriage for Archibald, son of Archibald and Sarah. From his parents' details showing on his marriage entry, think this link for Archibald, husband of Sarah McKenzie, back to Islay might indeed be correct  ;)

There is a marriage showing on SP in 1883 in Glasgow for an Archibald McArthur and a Sarah McKenzie that might be worth checking.

Dearest Monica.....
I am amazed, flabbergasted, and totally in awe, of your research abilities, and your unselfish willingness to help others in this morass of names & genetics! As I believe I've said, I have received more USEFUL information from people such as yourself, than from any other agency, and since I seem to be "challenged" when trying to do this on my own, thank goodness, you are here.

I HAD wondered if perhaps Archibald had left Scotland, as could find nothing looking for residence or death records, and I definitely will try to follow up on this clue of the son. Again, I thank you for providing this info. Also think this site, Rootschat, is the best of the many, without question, and I shall not "stray" far.

BTW, finally got an email from the "researcher" this morning, apologizing for the "delay", and informing me, after I questioned the info he sent, that he would "look into" this couple & children, again. Not impressed, I'm afraid!

First of all....Hi, Iain! Hope all well with you, and trust you are successful in your searches.

Monica, the info on James' death certificate says "farm labourer" as occupation for Duncan McArthur. Assume that equates with "ag lab" that I see on many others.  ;)
