I have a fairly extensive amount of families from Stanhope in my line but no Bainbridge lines. However I did look into one of the more prominent Bainbridge families - Emerson Muschamp Bainbridge, son of Cuthbert and Mary Bainbridge baptised Stanhope 24 SEP 1817. He married Annie Hudson 23 August 1839, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

He was the founder of Bainbridge's Department Store now renamed John Lewis in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The Stanhope area had a tradition of naming boys after friends and neighbours as evidenced in Emerson Muschamp. I have come across the same naming trends in North Carolina.

Thank you barryd for your reply.
The more I look into the Bainbridge's of the Stanhope area the more I find and the families are huge.
I should imagine they are all related, a nightmare to sort out. Actually I only started looking because I found a photo of my g/aunt's of a Thomas Bainbridge in WW1 Aust. Army uniform so decided to find out if he was a related. He is a cousin of my g/aunt's husband (Thomas Bainbridge Coulthard).

Thanks again for your interest.

Cheers

Hi

I am looking for more info on the family of Ann Bainbridge, who married James Watson.
As far as I know, she was born in Stanhope in 1747 and died on Christmas Day 1825.  She is buried in Stanhope Churchyard.  Her father may have been Joseph.  Her sons (there may have been more than these two) were John and Thomas.

I dont know if this question is still relevant, however I would dearly love information about the Bainbridge family of Stanhope. My mother was Kathleen Ramsay Bainbridge born on 17 September 1919, died on 11 November 1990. She had one sister Vera Bainbridge born around March 1916 I believe.  I know my mother's father died in 1919 before she was born. That is all the information I have. I would love to know about her parents and family.

Thank you so much. My mother I believe was brought up by her grandmother and moved to London to nurse around beginning of war. As I was born after the war I never knew my grandparents or anything about them.

One thing I did notice, my Auntie Vera was apparently born in June 1916.  I knew her well and I always thought her birthday was end of March (30th or 31st from memory). Interesting.

The June in the birth registration relates to the quarter. These are March, June, September and December. If the birth was late March it would be registered in the next quarter.
