Gallagher's from Keenagh More
« on: Thursday 27 June 13 00:20 BST (UK) »
I am researching my G grandfather John Walsh who married Ellen Gallagher in 1861 after his first wife Mary Gallagher, Ellen's sister died. Many children were produced from these two families. Not sure about Mary or Ellen's father or mother, I suspect it might be Edmond Gallagher. Edmond's father might be a James Gallagher.

John and Mary and Ellen lived in a village called Doduane, any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

John Carolan

Griffiths Valuation for 1856 shows John Walsh on plot 1d of Keenagh More townland.  Doodaun is in plot 3, just off the modern R312 road. Easy enough to locate today. John was renting a house, outbuildings and a one fifth share of 676 acres.

To trace back you’ll need to look at the parish records. Crossmolina’s RC records start in 1831. You can see where copies are held using this link:

There were no Walsh’s listed in Keenaghmore in the tithes in 1833 (townland is listed as Kennghmore). However there were some 60 Walsh’s in the parish at the time, so possibly they moved to the townland some time between 1833 and 1856.
