Tracing the Gemmell Family from Scotland and Ireland
« on: Wednesday 26 June 13 14:09 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandfather Robert Gemmell was born in Scotland 18/11/1893, he married Jessie (Jeannie) Munro, born 4/8/1894, they were married 29/1/1915 in Partick, Scotland.

From the Marriage record Robert’s parents were Hugh Gemmell and Mary Jane Gemmell (Small), I located their marriage record and confirmed they were married in Partick 25/9/1868. I have located them on the Scottish census records from 1881 and this notes that Hugh Gemmell was born abt 1847/8 in Ireland and Mary Jane was born abt 1850 in Ireland, Hugh’s parents are noted as William Gemmell and Jane Cunningham (noted on marriage and death record for Hugh) and Mary Jane’s parents are noted as Fleming Small and Mary Donnegh or Donnachie (noted on both marriage and death record for Mary).

Hugh and Mary Jane Gemmell had about 10 children as follows:

William – Born abt 1870
Mary J – Born abt 1872
Susanna – Born abt 1875
Sarah – Born abt 1877
Agnes M – Born abt 1880
Elizabeth – Born abt 1884
Frederick – Born abt 1887
Albert – Born abt 1890
Robert (GGF) – Born 18/11/1893

I have looked on Scotlandspeople, ancestry and a couple of websites for Ireland and have been unable to locate any births/marriages for either set of parents. I am placing this on the notice bords for both Scotland and Ireland to see if there is any one researching the Gemmell Family name and recognizes any of the names listed above or could suggest any other websites that could be used to research and Irish connection.

Thank you
Cumming, Henderson, Gemmell (Gamble, Gimble), Small, Donnagheu?, Watt, Moyes, Cranston, Rice and many more

the only gemmels i could find around that period are james and george gemmell in shankill co antrim on the griffiths valuation 1840s/1850s.there is a death in granard co longford for a fleming small in 1877 age 68 born circa 1809, there is also a marriage in granard for fleming small in 1857 this could be a second marriage if you work his age with the above death. there is also a marriage in cavan in 1855 for fleming small.

In North Antrim/Derry the surname Gemmell is also Gamble  :)

Registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 and the first complete census for Ireland is 1901- all too late to find this particular family.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,

Thank you every one.

Castlemcauliffe I have had a quick look at the link and looks promising thank you.

dathai, thank you I will have a look in to the Gemmell's in Shankill and the marriages for Fleming Small.

aghadowey, thank you for alternative surname as on his marriage record he is noted as Hugh Gamble and his father is noted as being William Gemmell, so I will look into this.

Thank you again.

I'm equally in the process of tracing back the lines from my grandmother Agnes Howard Gemmell (Coatbridge Scotland). Just to say that in using Scotlands People website and the various documents therein (births, marriages, deaths and census) and ensuring each family is linked to the previous one I've come across as spellings: Gemmell, Gemmel, Gammal, and Gamble. So one has to be patient and dig, dig, dig. Just a wee tip - if the town of birth is known (often from the census) but one can't find the records try just the year(s), town name, and first name: that's how I finally found my great grand father's birth record - recorded under the name Gammall (but written as Gemmell in the register). Happy hunting
