Portugal Research - Help getting started :)
« on: Tuesday 25 June 13 22:40 BST (UK) »
Hi Everybody,

My tree has taken an unexpected turn and I now find myself trying to trace ancestors in Portugal. I am a complete novice when it comes to what records existed and where they are held.

I am looking for a marriage very approximately in 1830.

Also the married couples births. I believe one is supposed to be born in Tavira and the other in Olhao.

I have tried the familysearch record set and not found what I am looking for.  I have pasted below the coverage table. My first problem is that I don't know which localities my locations fall into so don't know if they are covered!  ???

The Coverage Table shows the places and time periods of the original records in this collection. The table indicates how many records the collection has from each place. Most of the records in the collection are from the time periods listed in the table; however, the collection may have a few records from before or after the time period.
Locality   Baptisms, 1570-1910   Marriages, 1670-1910   Deaths, 1640-1910
Beja    15,890    0    0
Coimbra    21,525    3,130    9,206
Évora    8,176    2,890    0
Funchal    61,191    8,950    217
Guarda    0    183    0
Leiria    89,878    12,111    21,364
Lisbon    1,504    0    0
Portalegre    2,205    3,340    0
Porto    29,809    6,576    28,033
Portugal    12,348    6,840    6,750
Setúbal    80,029    2,284    2,168
Viseu    101,799    8,969    32,496
Totals    424,354    55,273    100,234

If they are not covered where would I need to go next? Is there a central records collection or would I need to go to individual churches?

Could anyone cover the basics for me. When did Portugal start nationally/centrally recording BMD data. Is there an index available? Can you order certificates on-line?

Any guidance is welcome to get me started on this quest.

Many Thanks,

Sarah   :)
