Town name help
« on: Monday 24 June 13 12:44 BST (UK) »
I got a poor relief application that my x4 great grandmother applied for in Glasgow. However I cannot make out her birth place. It looks like it says Crieff dawson, derry. But I have googled this and other variants but to no avail.

Does anyone know what or where this place was?

Thanks for any help.

Hi,
   Try CASTLEDAWSON.

Apologies Kingskerswell, i mistyped the name.  It looks like Caith Dawson.  There is a very definite dotted I in the word, so cannot be castle dawson. ??

Hi,
I wouldn't rule it out. It would depend what the official thought he heard and this is the only
 ?dawson in Co Derry.

Thanks kingskerswell. I wondered about accent as I've come across a few wrong words which may have been as a result of misunderstanding an accent. If this is the only dawson in county derry I will happily go with castledawson.

Thanks again.

Without seeing the actual poor relief application, it's difficult to judge.  If the "dawson" bit is pretty clear, then I would endorse Kingskerswell's suggestion of Castledawson.

However, if it is all just a bit unclear, I wouldn't rule out an attempt at Creevedonnell, in the civil parish of Clondermot.

It might be worth doubting Derry, and trying Carrickadawson, which is in the parish of Taughboyne, Co Donegal. (And Carrickadawson is much closer to Derry city than Castledawson is.)

It’s quite clear that the place is in Co Derry so we can probably safely exclude other counties. For me it’s Castledawson. If you say Castledawson quickly, with the emphasis on the first syllables, as is the way in this part of Ireland, then what you get sounds like Caith Dawson. Especially in a strong accent.
