Hospitals with Maternity Wings in Manchester/Fylde and Oldham
« on: Sunday 23 June 13 17:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

Seems my grandfather was a bit of a drunken vagabond who kept my grandmother barefoot and pregnant!

There's much debate in my immediate family (in Australia) about the actual location of place of birth for my mother (who died young in 1982).

Seems my grandparents kept moving about so I am wondering which hospitals my mother and her siblings may have been born in.

Here are the FREEBMD entries for my mother (who I have 'bolded') and her siblings;

Births Sep 1929   Tomany, Mary C - Davidson,  Fylde,  8e, 810.
Births Sep 1930  Tomany    (*)    Davidson    Fylde    8e   831
Births Dec 1931 Tomany    (*)    Davidson    Oldham    8d   966
Births Mar 1933  Tomany    (*)    Davidson    Oldham    8d   1032
Births Jun 1934   Tomany    (*)    Davidson    Manchester S.    8d   320
Births Sep 1935   Tomany    (*)    Davidson    Manchester S.    8d   290
Births Sep 1937  Tomany    (*)    Davidson    Manchester N.    8d   487

Or indeed were children of the poor born at home usually - before the introduction of the NHS?

Any thoughts and assistance appreciated,

Thanks - Jaahda

A home birth was indeed the norm -- even after the NHS!

Even upto the 1960's (if not beyond) a home birth was pretty normal --my mother had 4 of us at home during the 1950's

So it is most likely that your mother and her siblings would have been born at home -- wherever "home" was at the time

Hi

Do you have your mother's, or any of her siblings,  birth certificate. They should show the place of birth.

As Marmalady said, it was quite normal to have a home birth up until 1950/60s.
