Caroline Ward formerly Ruston died on board "Ashmore"

I have a record that shows that the above named person died on board "Ashmore", between Plymouth, Devon, England & Port Adelaide, on 5th July 1883. However, the South Australian Advertiser, from Trove, lists the arrivals from "Ashmore" on 1st September, 1883-

The following is a list of immigrants per Ashmore, which sailed from Plymouth on June 15, arrived at Port Adelaide on September 1: —

John Ward, carpenter, Caroline, and Harriet Ward:

Where would the newspaper have gained this information, & if incorrect, are there any other lists that are more accurate?

I don't think there is anything wrong with the record, just misleading possibly.

As you say in your post. "following is a list of immigrants per Ashmore" This is the list when the ship DEPARTED.

Problem was that they just copied the list given to them. I does not take into account the deaths on board.

The Surgeons list would contain details of the deaths and sickness on board, if available. It may be available through the Adelaide Library.

But you say you have a list showing her death   "I have a record that shows that the above named person died on board "Ashmore", between Plymouth, Devon, England & Port Adelaide, on 5th July 1883."
This obviously is Accurate.

This is a report of the voyage.  It says there were 3 deaths, "being people who embarked in a delicate state of health" http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article33768962.

Overall it is saying what excellent conditions and how well the passengers were looked after.

Thanks everybody, so the newspaper received its evidence from the manifest, most likely telegraphed to them-I think the telegraph had been invented and was in use by 1883?

I didn't know that about the newspaper lists, so that's a fact learned "not a lot of people know that!"

Caroline's daughter Harriet Elizabeth Ward born 1878 in Middleton on the Wolds, East Riding of Yorkshire, England travelled with her father John, now a widower to Dimboola, Victoria, where John started farming. Harriet Elizabeth married a man called Mcloughlin/Mclaughlan, and had a son Frank. I think the marriage took place in Dimboola, not sure when, but when Harriet was relatively young. This man deserted her, and eventually she married a man called William Cox Vickery.

Can anyone help me find the marriages?
