Dear All,

In Ford Cemetery I have a grave listed as 272, but I notice a lot of entries state 272. Is this a communal grave? The person in question is listed as 19 months in Sept 1911

Thank you

Hi

If you give us a name we can check  the burials register to see which section this person was buried in. From what you have said its quite possible this was a public grave where the rights to burial were not purchased so there will be no headstone but if we can look and see what the section was then that would enable Marienne to check the graves registers to confirm that.

Have had a look and there is (unusually) no indication of a section number in the available database.

Marienne may be able to check, but the lack of a section number and evidence of other burials at the same time in the same grave number does indicate this was a public grave and therefore its extremely unlikely to be marked with a headstone.

Dear All,

I am looking for the grave of Catherine Brennan, died 1st May 1937, aged 58years, 41 South Chester Street. The grave reference at Ford Cemetery says JW531, but it could be TW. Either way I cant locate it, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Marienne,
When it says Robert Smith is the deed holder, does that mean he owns the land the grave is in, the people in the grave seem unrelated, so I am wondering if this is a public grave, rather than a grave for Roberts family?
Also on Find a Grave, TW531 doesn't return a result, maybe I am misunderstanding how it works

If it helps, people could purchase the rights of burial in a grave, and the right to erect a gravestone if they wanted to.
They didn't own the land as such but could decide who was buried in the plot. The other people may have been relations but also could be friends/ neighbours they were close to.
I have a deed from a grave in Yew Tree, it was purchased in 1918 and says it grants rights of burial in the plot  'in perpetuity', and had to be produced if a further burial was to take place.

I am unsure if the same would apply to 1931 in Ford but do know that in more recent times civil cemeteries usually limit the time scale to x amount of years.

Find a Grave is a volunteer project, not all graves/burials will show on there they only appear if someone has submitted them.

Ford Cemetery section usage list can be seen here:
https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~hibernia/genealogy/PDFs/Ford_Cemetery_Section_Usage.pdf
and that confirms that TW is a Private Section.
